On May 26, 2010, the Riviera Maya branch of the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals (AMPI) met for a breakfast meeting to preview and discuss an upcoming forum to promote and shape the future of Playa del Carmen real estate market and urban growth in the area. The speech from the president of AMPI Riviera Maya, Wilberth Gutierrez, summarized the main ideas to be promoted during the forum.

The group of Playa del Carmen realtors was informed of the purpose of the forum, which is to attract diversity in investment, and in extension, in economic activity for the area. In terms of physical area, the new investment is to be focused on the part of the city on the opposite side of the Cancun-Tulum federal highway from the beach, bringing further high-profile development to this side.

The key areas of focus will be educational institutions, high-end residential development, commercial areas, some kinds of industry and agriculture (currently a virtually non-existent activity in the area). While development has already been taking place on a fairly fast pace on the opposite side of the highway, much of the development has been focused on the local population, while the beach-side of the city has received the majority of international attention in investment and real estate.

The forum is expected to attract large-scale domestic and foreign investment to the far side of the highway; realtors in Playa del Carmen will begin to promote the new real estate opportunities which arise, now geared towards buyers both from Mexico and United States and Canada, as well as other countries.

The new focus will mean that Playa del Carmen properties suitable for international retirees and real estate investors will begin to appear in this area of the city, providing many of the features these buyers tend to look for, including gated communities and easy to shopping and services. While these properties will tend to be less expensive than those on the beach-side, Playa del Carmen offers the advantage that although these areas are on the other side of the federal highway, they are still relatively close to the beach, at about a 5-10 minute drive.

The forum will also include AMPI's new "AMPI Green" focus which promotes sustainability and respect for local culture.
