When it comes to the relationship between golf and Playa del Carmen real estate, it's clear that golf plays a much more important role that just another past time among the list of activities; in many ways it defines the area's lifestyle.

The connection between golf and real estate in the area starts a fairly basic level; most of the region's best real estate areas or most desirable communities are centered around golf courses. The original upscale, gated community, right next to downtown southward on the beachfront, is Playacar. This community, perhaps the favorite for expats in the area, is centered around the Playacar Golf Course, and the atmosphere and lifestyle is, in many ways, defined by this fact; it's very green, upscale, designed to enjoy walking and outdoors and very tasteful.

One of the city's newest up-and-coming areas, about 3 miles north of town, is home to Latin America's first PGA course, El Camaleon, designed by Greg Norman. In February, 2011, the fifth annual Mayakoba Golf Classic PGA event took place on this course, which has hosted the event since its beginning. A second golf course in the area was designed by Jack Nicklaus. A third course, designed by Nick Price, is currently on the way.

As is the case with Playacar, these courses are directly linked to some of the area's most prestigious residential developments, sometimes purely residential, other times in the form of upscale condo resorts.

In addition to the directly linked developments, new Playa del Carmen real estate in the area, outside of the golf course developments, has been following the upscale tone set by the golf culture, which serves as one of the main motivations for buyers to choose this part of the city.

Other communities where golf plays a central role include Puerto Aventuras and Gran Bahia. Puerto Aventuras is a marina community which has been developed as a complete community in itself, including a mall, a school, a dining area, and, of course, a golf course. The golf course is currently being completed with its second 9 holes, and very desirable lots are being sold along the new part of the course. The presence of golf is central to making the community complete for residents.

Gran Bahia is a complete retirement focused resort-style community. Including planned activities and outings, pools, gyms, recreation areas and much more, golf allows retirees to enjoy a luxury beachfront lifestyle to its fullest.

In total, there are currently 13 courses in the Playa del Carmen area, and more on the way. These courses are central to the lifestyle of the area, and in many ways provide a focal point in defining the area's culture.
