When most people think of Mexico real estate, they think of the beachfront resort communities on the Pacific Coast and on the Yucatan Peninsula.  While these are excellent options, a few communities in Mexico’s central highlands have already gained attention from international buyers, and a few others are showing excellent potential to become the next growing expat community.

One of the most outstanding examples of a well-established expat community are the towns along Lake Chapala.  This beautiful lake is located less than an hour away from Mexico’s second largest city – Guadalajara – and has been home to American and Canadian retirees for decades.

The history of Lake Chapala real estate for comfortable retirement actually goes back well over a century to the time when Mexico’s president Porfirio Diaz and the upper class from both Guadalajara and Mexico City (about 8 hours away) owned homes in the towns of Chapala and Ajijic for summer getaways and retirement. In modern times, expat retirees can enjoy these same comforts, small town atmosphere and beautiful views at a price very accessible to the average American.

About 4 hours away, half way to Mexico City, the Morelia Real Estate area is just beginning to capture attention of some Canadian and American buyers.  Like Lake Chapala, its history as a colonial vacation spot is well established among Mexico’s upper middle class.  This mid-sized city offers all the modern conveniences of a significant urban area, combined with very well maintained colonial charm, but without traffic and the hustle and bustle of the large metropolitans.

With a half-hour drive, there are a number of lake communities, similar to Lake Chapala, but still less known on the international scene, offer the charm of colonial towns with rich traditions dating back to pre-colonial times.  Large, beautiful homes with splendid views over the lakes and villages can be found for unbelievable prices.

Both the city and the lakefront towns offer either colonial homes or modern condos in gated complexes, depending on the taste of each buyer.

If you are thinking about buying in Mexico, and the old charm of the central highlands sounds appealing, contact an agent to talk about which area would be best for you.
