The sea between Baja California and Mexico’s mainland is known as the Sea of Cortez; on this body of water, there are a number of excellent places to consider a Mexico home for sale, especially for those who enjoy boating – there is a series of marinas running through the Sea to facilitate yacht travel.

Two notable markets in the Sea of Cortez area are La Paz real estate and Mazatlan real estate.  La Paz is an old Mexican town on the beachfront which has a long history dating its founding back to the time of the Spanish conquest.  The town was fairly well known among travellers – it was the scene of John Steinbach’s novel, The Pearl – it was in the second half of this century that La Paz grew as a major tourist destination and expat community.

La Paz is also the capital of its state – Baja California Sur – and offers residents all modern services and conveniences.  Real estate buyers can choose between beachfront condos and homes, as well as excellent properties in communities a little farther back, within walking distance to shopping, dining and other activities.

Mazatlan, located just south of the area where the Sea of Cortez merges with the Pacific Ocean, offers the rare combination of colonial city with resorts and modern beachfront luxury.  Mazatlan has been a center of northern Mexican culture for some time.  During the 1800s, a wave of central European immigrants established what would become one of Mexico’s favourite beers – Pacifico – and brought with them the Polka-style music that would be a central influence in the emergence of Norteno, one of the country’s most popular to this date.

This same charming colonial city offer real estate buyers from North America old fixer homes, and other colonial buildings which are excellent projects, and offer a beautiful home with a distinctly Mexican style as a final product.  At the same time, the city has high-rise beachfront condos overlooking the Pacific.  Whichever property type buyers choose, they will enjoy a full selection of modern stores, hospitals and tourist-oriented attractions and events.

American and Canadian buyers will do well to consider their options on the Sea of Cortez.  La Paz, Mazatlan and other communities offer an ideal combination of Mexico’s history, a beachfront lifestyle and modern services.
