One of the most attractive points of Playa del Carmen real estate has been the levels of safety enjoyed in the community and surrounding area.   This factor is expected to increase even more as the State government plans to install an “amphibious operation” at the naval base on the island of Cozumel, across the strait.

As part of the transfer of rights and responsibilities of the concession title of the federal zone and water surface to the Secretary of Navy for the installation of the base of amphibious operation (BOA) in Cozumel, Governor Roberto Borge noted that with this project will further enhance the security levels in the surrounding area.   Currently the communities in the area, including Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, are among those with the highest level of security throughout the country.

For the island of Cozumel, which is a favorite visiting place for residents of Playa del Carmen, as well as an important nearby real estate market, the naval-based security is important since it is one of the world's leading cruise destinations. Cozumel and Playa del Carmen are among the safest cities in the country, and the main transportation for both people and goods between them is by means of ships. Increased security in the strait dividing the two and around the island of Cozumel is a benefit for both communities.   Many residents also enjoy sailing and other boating activities.

The new project is considered a sign of the willingness of the state, the Federal Mexican Ministry of the Navy and the Municipal Government to continue to provide safety to all residents of the area.

The commander of the Naval Region V, Conrado Aparicio, said the Navy has carried out more than 190 rescues in the state, so that this second base will ensure the safety of all persons participating in sea activity.

The new project   will receive an investment of 70 million pesos (about $6 million USD).

Importantly, the transfer of federal zone (on the oceanfront) covers an area of one thousand 84 square meters, while the area of water surface donated by the Municipal Port Administration, consists of five thousand 220 square meters.
