Shangri-La Beach in Playa del Carmen offers that ideal balance between being in town and close to all the action, while still having the feel of being a quiet, out-of-the-way paradise.  For this reason, it is without a doubt one of the top beaches of the Riviera Maya.

The Splendid Beaches of the Riviera Maya

Like all the beaches stretching out for over a hundred miles along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, Shangri-La Beach has wide beaches of soft, white sand and the water of the Caribbean beyond is warm and has a beautiful turquoise color.  Because of the island of Cozumel, the water in Playa del Carmen is especially calm and gentle for swimming.  Within less than half a century, the beaches of the Riviera Maya have transformed from being abandoned and surrounded by jungle to one of the world’s most well-loved tourist regions.

Playa del Carmen – Convenience and Lifestyle

The nice thing about the Riviera Maya is that has retained many of its isolated, abandoned beaches while growing and offering many activities for tourists and residents, families and vacationers, the young and the … young-at-heart.   Shangri-La beach epitomizes this balance. The side of activity and convenience is offered by its walking-distance from downtown.  A very lively and nice part of Fifth Avenue – Playa del Carmen’s main beachfront pedestrian street – is only a few blocks away from Shangri-la.  Here there are cafes, shops for clothing and trendy home accessories,  international restaurants and sports bars.  All the stores and services of downtown are a walk or short bike ride away.

Shangri-la Resort

In contrast to the activity on Fifth Avenue, Shangri-La is home to a small boutique resort which offers quaint, thatched-roof cabins rather than ritzy hotel buildings.  The cabins are located right on the sand, with rustic paths and palm trees between.  The atmosphere of this resort defines the beach as a quieter place with the feel of being more isolated from the town, even though it is right next to the heart of downtown.

Atmosphere of the Beach

It is the balance of these two factors – in-town convenience and rustic atmosphere – that define Shangri-La beach.  Visitors can walk there from the most happening clubs of downtown, yet relax like they are in the Mayan jungle.

Anyone who is making plans to head to Playa del Carmen shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit Shangri-La Beach.  They will not be disappointed by this fine balance of convenience and pure relaxation.
