So, imagine you are walking along one of the beaches of the Riviera Maya.  To one side is the wide beach and the turquoise Caribbean; to the other side are nice little boutique hotels, restaurants (some still thatched-roof, others upscale and modern) and nice clubs.  Then you see a lighthouse tucked in between some newer condo buildings. Do you know where this is?

Of course, if you’ve been here, you know that this is El Faro Beach in Playa del Carmen, right in the heart of downtown.  “El Faro” simply means “the lighthouse,” and this beautiful landmark has become the most famous landmark on the beaches of Playa del Carmen, perhaps rivaled only by the ferry dock to Cozumel just a short walk down the beach.

Besides being really easy to find from anywhere along the downtown beachfront, El Faro is also very easy to get to.  All of the east-west roads downtown lead to the beach, and from there, you’ll either see the lighthouse, or everyone knows where it is.  The beach around El Faro is an idea place to have fun of just about any kind!

Activities include enjoying dinner in a nice restaurant overlooking the beach, sipping coffee in the morning or evening, having a cold drink at a bar, playing beach volleyball, swimming, collecting sea shells, going on boat tours, diving snorkelling, etc.  At this beach it works just as well to enjoy a good bar or restaurant or bring a picnic with you.  It is in the heart of downtown, and all the best of Playa del Carmen is a walk away!

The beach itself is very wide here; that’s why there’s plenty of room for beachfront volleyball or a picnic on the beach, even this is one of the areas most visited.  The Caribbean Sea beyond is a bright turquoise, and in the distance you can see the island of Cozumel.

Many people dream of living in a place like this, within walking distance to all services, yet right next to the most beautiful beach in the world.  In Playa del Carmen, a dream like this can easily be reality.  Nice condos in the residential areas behind El Faro, or even right on the beachfront, can be found at surprisingly accessible prices.  In any case, a visit is most certainly nice, to make a huge understatement!

El Faro beach in Playa del Carmen is a favorite worldwide – for a very good reason!
