If you are walking along the beaches of the Riviera Maya in Playa del Carmen’s downtown area, eventually you reach a point where the restaurants, bars, jet-ski rentals, and games of beach volleyball all come to an end.  This is Coco beach in Playa del Carmen.  Many people assume this is the end of everything, and turn around to head back downtown.  What they don’t realize is that there are new things happening which are making Coco beach much more central, and that it’s already a very hip and romantic place to hang out.

The beaches beyond Coco beach look empty and solitary, still mostly lined with jungle.  Yet if you look about a mile down the beach, you’ll notice that a new resort is under construction.  Less visible, but already there, are a few nice, upscale condos between Coco and the new hotel. Once these are completed, Coco Beach will become a central point where everyone from the new hotels heads to enjoy the action of downtown.

On the other hand, there’s no reason to wait for these new developments to complete.  Coco Beach is already emerging as the newest, hippest beach community in the downtown area.  Nice, brand new condos are going up and being bought up by investors and young people interested in enjoying this beachfront lifestyle.  There’s a restaurant on the beach, and a new pizza shop offer great pizza at very good prices.  The community is defined by the beach on one side, and by Fifth Avenue on the other; Fifth Avenue is Playa del Carmen’s main downtown pedestrian road lined with cafes, shops, restaurants and bars.  As more services begin to appear along the north part of this street, the Coco Beach stretch is just beginning to show signs of life as well.

Coco beach itself is also a very romantic place.  It’s an ideal beach to enjoy as couple, watching the moon rise, with a bottle of wine.  While the lights and music of downtown can be seen and heard in the distance, and the lights of the island of Cozumel light the horizon, the beach is quiet and romantic in the evening.

Right now, just walking by, it may still seem that Coco beach is the end of everything.  Yet is a great beachfront and community to enjoy, and there are good signs it will soon be more like the center of everything.
