When you buy Mexico real estate, there are two basic ways you can go about it; one is the safe and smart way, and the other is  … well, the other, not-so-safe-and-smart way.  Of course we all like to think we’re the smart ones, but the good news is that there are Mexico real estate resources online so you can prepare yourself from an early stage and feel certain that you are really going about it the safe and smart way.

There are two basic components to being a smart buyer – one is ensuring that processes, documents and paperwork are in order, the other is finding good properties.

For the first part, which we’ll call “processes,” there are excellent Mexico real estate guides available online which will cover the basics that you need to know to be sure that you are reducing unnecessary risks.   The topics could include:

Selecting an agent – Since you will be heavily dependent on your agent’s know-how, this is the most important step to do well.  Take your time, review credentials and references, and listen to your gut feeling.

The “Restricted Zone” and owning property by means of a bank trust – Such e-books will explain this zone along the border and oceanfront which requires a special kind of ownership through a bank trust and what steps you need to take as a buyer.

Contracts – Your agent will take care of the contracts, but it’s to your advantage to know the basics so you have a feel for what’s going on.

Online tools for finding a good property can help you get an idea of what you want and what prices you should be considering. Again, your agent will be your most important resource, but preparing ahead of time helps give your search a head start and give you more confidence.

Listings – This is the basic resource you will work with.  Find good, thorough and organized listings to get a feel for the market.

Deals – Experienced agents who work in the area will know best what is a good deal in Mexico.  Check the top deals they select; you might be surprised!

Notifications – A few real estate websites are offering e-mail notifications for when a property shows up with your criteria.  This saves you the trouble of going back through the listings over and over again.

Preparing yourself means you will have a better idea of what’s going on and you will be able to move through the searching and purchasing processes with more confidence that you are one of the smart buyers!
