Thomas L. Lloyd, mazatlan Broker By Thomas L. Lloyd

This is a story that one of my clients shared and I wanted to pass on!

In late 2010, I bought a Playa del Carmen condo in a nice, new gated community just out of town.  Since then, I’d have to say, my Christmases have been very different, but probably in most ways much better than ever before.

I know that up north there are many ideas that associate winter with the cold – snow, tobogganing, snow men, warm fire places, etc.  T.V. really makes it look romantic and makes you think that to feel “Christmasy” you should also feel cold.

I have to be honest; I absolutely love Christmas, but I absolutely hate the cold.  I suspect that if you’re honest, you’ll probably admit to feeling something very close to the same.

So imagine all the seasonal joy, fun and family time, but without the snow or the cold.  What do you get? Christmas in Playa del Carmen.

When we first got our condo, there were only a handful of people in the new complex, and even fewer of those came down for Christmas.  The next year, a good deal more of the neighbors were down there. In any case, they were friendly folk from back home, all here in Playa del Carmen for the same reason; get away from the cold and enjoy paradise!

So we did a lot of the usual Christmas stuff – a Christmas tree with the presents, lights around the windows, roast turkey for Christmas dinner, etc.  But I can tell you one thing – we definitely were not huddling around the fireplace!

Christmas Eve we were down at the poolside in shorts and sandals – some people even took a dip, but it was by no means cold!  Someone put on Christmas carols; we were all down there enjoying some drinks and having good conversation.  That was the first year.

Then someone threw the question out there:

“Don’t you miss having a white Christmas?”

We all kind of looked at each other, as though we felt guilty for not missing it. Then the guy who asked broke out laughing – “I don’t miss it a bit!”

We all agreed.  The next days we spent in town – it’s about a 10 minute drive away.  The small shops with Christmas lights along the tree-lined street near the beach full of people all in a good mood, enjoying life – I have to say, it all feels much more “Christmasy” to me than a freezing cold city up there with dirty slush on the street and all the people so busy that they don’t even enjoy the season …
