If you are considering a Riviera Maya condo for your retirement, one very attractive options is downtown Playa del Carmen.  While there certainly are a few vibrant nightlife spots, downtown isn’t all crowds and young people.  Retirement downtown is best described as a balance between convenience and relaxation, with the beach always a walk away.

Downtown condo complexes can offer you any combination (and sometimes even all) of the following features:

Spas & gyms – While there are plenty of gyms, spas and yoga schools downtown, having these onsite is a nice touch for retirement, making relaxation an easy part of everyday life.

Elevators – Buildings in Playa del Carmen are only 3-4 stories high (maximum, by law) but, as when retirement comes around, it’s definitely a nice touch.

Terraces with Pools – These can be in the form of a central common area or a rooftop lounge.  In any case, these spaces are relaxing and make life comfortable.

Balconies – There’s nothing like enjoying a coffee in the morning out on the balcony with the refreshing morning breeze of the Caribbean before the day heats up, or a cold drink in the afternoon.

Beautiful, modern units – The style of condos in the Riviera Maya, and especially downtown, is a relaxed, modern look.  Most units are open-concept with oversized tiles, and a very comfortable living space.

Underground parking – If you decide to own a car, this is an important point; the shade keeps the cars cool and out of the midday Caribbean sun.

The downtown community offers the following benefits

Walking distance to the beach – These aren’t just any beaches – many consider the soft white sand and the turquoise Caribbean to be the best in the world.

Restaurants, cafes, bars – There is everything from authentic local food to international gourmet.

Shops and boutiques – On the street known as Fifth Avenue, there are shops that sell everything from knickknacks and handicrafts to jewelry and cigars.

Large supermarkets – There is a Walmart and 3 similar large supermarkets. There are also other big-name international stores and larger Mexican chains that sell high-quality international brand names.

Clinics and health services – There is one state-of-the-art hospital near downtown, and many good clinics, dental shops, etc. within walking distance.  This is an important point for retirement.

Local markets – Whether you are looking for very fresh and tasty fruit and vegetables or fish caught in the Caribbean that same morning, the local markets are a nice convenience to have.

Retirement in the Riviera Maya and specifically downtown Playa del Carmen is an excellent option to consider.
