When you decide to start your Mexico real estate search, there are numerous approaches you may take.  Since most people start their search because of their love for one of Mexico’s many beaches, one possible approach (which most people overlook) is to start with your favorite beach, and from there search for nearby real estate.

For example, let’s say that you’ve fallen in love with the beaches in the Riviera Maya.  Before deciding for sure which one is your favorite, you can do some online research, looking for pictures, maps, reviews, and videos to explore a few other beaches in this region.

While online searches are not the same as visiting in person, they can give you a good idea to start with which areas suit your tastes, and which ones don’t.  For example, if you like marinas, golf courses and quiet, picturesque residential neighborhoods, you would probably prefer Puerto Aventuras real estate on the beachfront stretches between the marinas. On the other hand, if you prefer to be close to nightlife, beach clubs and large stores, condos on the downtown stretch of Playa del Carmen’s beaches near “El Faro” (the city’s most famous landmark – a lighthouse) would probably hold more appeal.

Whatever the case, since this is a preliminary stage, it wouldn’t hurt to choose 2 or 3 interesting beaches in the region.  From here, you can already to a preliminary property search online.  For this reason, it’s good to locate your beach on a map after you’ve explored pictures, videos and descriptions.  Good real estate listings will include a map search option so you can visually see which properties are within a reasonable distance of the beach you like.

Some beachfront websites for the Riviera Maya and other parts of Mexico will include some listings on the side, and perhaps even marked on the map to make this step even easier for you.

Remember that this is just a preliminary stage.  You will want to contact an experienced agent, let them know which beach caught your attention, and which nearby listings you like.  In all likelihood, the agent will suggest other properties nearby that you may not have found.  They may even suggest a similar beach that offers some further advantages (lower prices, more services, more nature, etc.) based on your tastes.

When you visit to view properties, you will also visit the beachfront itself.  In all likelihood you will confirm what you found online; if not, your agent will be able to guide you to the most sutiable community.

This definitely not the only way to search for beachfront real estate in Mexico, but certainly an appealing one.
