For many people who think of Mexico real estate, the Yucatan Peninsula comes to mind quite quickly.  However, what fewer people are aware of is the lesser-known areas of the Peninsula, such as Costa Maya real estate and Campeche real estate; with the entire region growing as one super tourism-region, such areas have great potential to take off in both tourism and real estate, pointing to good investment and great lifestyle.   The following is a brief description of each area.

Costa Maya

Costa Maya is the south half of the Mexican Caribbean, the north half of which is the most popular and successful tourist destination and expat destination in Latin America (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, etc.)  Separated from the more well-known areas by a huge biosphere reserve (Sian Ka’an,) Costa Maya’s biggest community is a small fishing village called Mahahual that welcomes cruise ships regularly, on which occasions the little boardwalk is crowded and lively; for the rest of the time, it remains quiet, relaxed and very local.

The few expats in the area live both in quaint homes and condos in town, as well as beautiful beachfront villas out along the beach road – a quiet, countryside road where you’re more likely to have to wait for sheep crossing than for other cars.

Expats enjoy the same wide, white-sanded beaches and bright water of the Caribbean as they do in the areas to the north, but with a quieter lifestyle, really off-the-beaten track, and even less expensive!  Even if the area doesn’t take off for tourism, many real estate buyers are drawn by this feature.

Campeche

The city of Campeche is only about 2 hours away from the more well-known city of Merida.  People who have visited say it is the most beautifully preserved colonial city they have seen.  What’s more, it’s directly on the waterfront, and surrounded by 17th century pirate walls adding yet another level of charm.

In addition the very low-priced colonial homes in town, north and south of the city there are beachfront areas and quaint little towns where prices are low and access to all basic services are easy.  The city includes a Walmart and an international airport.  The very well connected airports of Merida and Cancun are only 2 hours and 5 hours away, respectively.  The area is already seeing golf courses and marinas go in, and towns are investing into building tourist-friendly images, yet real estate prices and the cost of living are very low.

Mexico real estate buyers looking for something in an up-and-coming region will do well to consider Costa Maya or Campeche.
