Many expats who choose Mexico as their new home are to some extent impressed or even lured by the colonial charm this country offers.  Yet, many choose the newer beachfront communities like Cancun and Playa del Carmen as their homes.  While some people out there have said that these are two completely different styles and colonial styles just aren’t what beach lovers are looking for, I’ve always thought that a combination of the two would be the ideal balance and find high appeal.  A development I’ve recently come across in Playa del Carmen shows that this balance is really possible.

The development is Hacienda del Rio Residential, and it’s basic concept is to combine the best of both worlds, offering homes designed with a traditional colonial style placed within the context of a beautiful gated community in a beachfront paradise.

The design of the homes is an essential factor.  They include brightly painted facades, heavy wood and stonework, archways and similar features.  Walking past or into one of these homes, residents will feel that they are stepping back a few centuries – except that the homes will be completely new!

At the same time, residents will enjoy the best of modern comfort.  The homes include good windows and doors, all connections (electricity, water, phone and internet) and a clean, modern layout.

The complex is the first taste of Playa del Carmen’s paradise setting; large green areas, swimming pools and a very unique river-style pool running through the back yard of each home all create a pleasant, natural setting in which residents will enjoy their colonial homes.

The community is a closed gated community that offers many green areas, plenty of nature and wildlife and bike trails running throughout.  All owners within the community will have access to an exclusive beach club which is within reasonable walking distance, or a short bike ride away.  The beach itself offers the soft white sand and warm turquoise water that has made Playa del Carmen famous.

This development is a new experiment – offering buyers a colonial-style home with access to a luxury, modern beachfront lifestyle, with an exclusive beach club and many other features.  I feel that this will hold very high appeal for Americans and Canadians, offering the “best of both worlds” rarely found elsewhere.
