Here is a story which a client shared with me recently. He wasn’t planning on staying in Yucatan, but he fell in love, and soon found himself looking for their ideal Yucatan home to make this paradise his permanent home. Read the rest, straight from the horse’s mouth:
“About 2 years ago, my wife had been retired for a while and wanted to try something different. We had heard about vacationing in the state of Yucatan, Mexico from some friends; they told us it was a nice mix of colonial – you know, classic Mexican stuff – and beachfront. We decided to go for it.
Our friends helped us find a nice beachfront home to rent near in Progreso. Progreso is a small town about 20 minutes north of Merida, which is a larger city. We packed our bags for a couple months, thinking it would just be a nice change for a few months – just the coldest winter months in winter.
We loved it. It wasn’t like vacation exactly; it was relaxing every day, just like vacation, but something was different. We had neighbors from the U.S. and Canada. It just seemed like we were meeting up with old friends we had known all along. In a very short time, we felt like were at home. It caught us off guard, really. One day, when it was getting close to the time to head back, we sat down and talked.
‘You know what, I kind of think I want to stay here,’ I said.
‘Me too,’ she answsered. ‘Do you think we can do it?’
I didn’t know. So I started looking into Yucatan real estate. By that time we were no longer surprised by the really cheap prices; I had been asking off-handedly now and then. I think we had both been subconsciously thinking about it (or maybe even consciously, but not admitting to it yet …)
We started looking at numbers at the same time. The budget looked good. We knew from experience that it didn’t cost much to live here. So eventually we contacted an agent, and began to look.
There are still some loose ends to tie up and details to work out, but we’re settled into our own house now. We’ve been back home a few times to take care of things there, but haven’t looked back, and I don’t think we will.”
This couple ended up buying Yucatan land for sale and building. They’re happily living in paradise in the house of their dreams right now!
