When we think of Mexico real estate, many different images could come to mind.  One of the most charming options is that of a quaint cottage on a lakefront, surrounded by hills and small villages where life has hardly changed for centuries …

The Lakes – In the hill highlands of central Mexico, there are some very large lakes, such as the Lake Chapala real estate area near the large city of Guadalajara, or the Morelia real estate area about 4 hours away, with the nearby lake called Lake Patzcuaro.  Properties offer beautiful views of the water adding a certain charm to life.

The Landscape – These areas are also hilly, with fields, forests and old villages forming a patch-work in the rolling countryside.  Combined with the lake, a cottage with views like these is enough to transport you to another time, another way of life.

The Climate – One of the most attractive features of these areas is the climate.  There is sunshine most of the year, and even in the “rainy season” the rain comes hard for a few hours, and then it clears up and the sun comes out again.  Yet, unlike the beachfront areas, it is not very hot; the days are somewhat hot, but the evenings and nights cool off.  A short time during the year, the nights are cool enough to put a fire in the fireplace!

The Traditions – The people who have lived in the villages of this region of Mexico have lived here for centuries; some traditions date back to before the Spanish conquest.  There is music, festivities, art work and regional food.  All of it is accessible and allows residents to participate and try things out!

The Way of Life – The people who have lived here have the same slow-paced lifestyle for as many centuries.  Americans, Canadians and Europeans (and even Mexicans from the cities) who arrive eventually adapt take on some of this way of thinking and doing things.  People take things as they come, and life is relaxing.

The Conveniences – While life has hardly changed, modernization has brought a few benefits.  For example, the nearby cities (usually within 30-60 minutes) will offer international stores and good hospitals, as well as international airports.

Owning a beachfront cottage in central Mexico really does offer a different kind of lifestyle; it is charming and relaxing, and – perhaps best of all – the world’s best climate!
