When you choose a Cancun retirement, you have chosen life in Paradise!  So, what comes next?  While adjusting to living on the world’s finest beaches in a beautiful, modern city is not so difficult, there are steps you can and should take to prepare for the big move, including the following.

Find Cancun Real Estate – Even if you are only going to be living in Cancun part of the year, owning a property and have a home that you will set up and enjoy the way you want it is important.  There are many fine Cancun properties for sale on the beachfront which are retirement friendly (elevators, etc.) and include amenities like pools, gyms and spas.  It’s worth taking the time to find the condo that is right for your needs.  The first step you will want to take is to find and contact an experienced, professional agent.

Buy Insurance – If you are going to own a car or a boat you will want to insure it. The same is true for the property you are buying.  Health insurance is a good way to ensure the best healthcare at the best price.  Your real estate agent will be able to suggest good insurance providers.

Investigate Healthcare – Whether you buy insurance or not, you will want to look into different healthcare options and know what hospitals there are and what they specialize in.  Cancun is home to several state-of-the-art hospitals that offer top-of-the-line international quality service at much lower costs that in the U.S.

Look into Residency – If you plan to stay in Mexico more than 6 months at a time, you will need to gain residency papers.  There are experienced lawyers who can guide you through the process for a fairly reasonable price.

Buy Plane Tickets – This is the easy part.  The nice thing about being retired is that your schedule will be fairly flexible, and you’ll be able to find very well priced direct flights.  Direct flights to and from all major destinations in North America can be found at excellent prices.

Pack Your Bags! – Getting ready to head down will be exciting!  If you are staying in Cancun permanently, there are also international movers who will transport your belongings and take care of all customs documentation.

Retirement in Cancun will be very relaxing; taking some little (and some big) steps to prepare for it will just make the whole process that much smoother.
