So, you've decided to make the leap and move to Mexico. Now, you're searching for that ideal Mexico real estate. But should you be looking for a condo or a house? That condo for sale downtown you saw today was beautiful with an amazing view, but that home you saw first was also very elegant and attractive.

The following are some pointers to help you decide:

Yard Space - Surprisingly, this is usually a point in favor of condos (as these examples will show you.) Many condos in Mexico have large, shared green spaces that the neighbors seldom use, making them available for a variety of uses. Homes in Mexico tend to have small yards. While larger yards are available, there is an added cost to them (relative to condos in Mexico, at least; even these luxury homes are very well priced compared to properties in the U.S.)

Amenities - A similar point can be made about amenities. Many condos will have common areas with shaded spaces for barbecues or simply enjoy the afternoon outside, not to mention large pools. Of course, you can get these in homes, but again you get more for your cash in a condo. Mexico's condo developers have also kept up well with demand offering gyms, spas and even sports facilities!

Private Space - Now the point where homes take the hat is private space; if you have a large patio with a pool and a shaded barbecue area in your home in Mexico, it's all yours and only yours. And, again, while you'll pay more than for a condo, the prices are still surprisingly low!

Maintenance Convenience - I say “maintenance convenience” because in both cases costs of keeping up a property are very low in Mexico - for everything from mowing the lawn to paying property taxes. I mention this point because it is actually surprisingly even. While condos are a little easier right off the bat, with maintenance already in place, it doesn't take much effort to find a full-service property management company that will provide your home with a full package of maintenance services. The nice part about a home is that you can choose how much you want included in the package and what you want to do yourself or hire individual contractors for. You could trim it right down and hire only a gardener, or you could go all out and have one company even provide house cleaning.

Views - Condos tend to win out on views since they usually a little taller. However, there are exceptions, such as beachfront or hillside homes.

While generally speaking there is no “right choice,” these factors can help you choose the property type best for your needs.
