Mexico's colonial style has appeal. Yet, once you've decided that you would like to live in a colonial-style home, you still have a wide variety of options in front of you to choose from, including - an option most people are unaware of - modern homes built in a colonial style. The following are a few ideas to consider.

Colonial fixer-upper - This is one of the most popular options since in many classic colonial cities - such as Merida and Morelia - the middle-upper class whose ancestors built these charming homes with courtyards, fountains and archways, now tend to see these homes a nuisance - kind of like old junk in an attic - in the busy downtown area that they prefer to get away from. For this reason, they tend to sell them off cheap. Expats who like the charm of the old downtown walk-everywhere lifestyle can grab up these properties and restore them at fairly low costs. However, such a project is not for everyone, since surprises are bound to turn up!

Restored colonial - Another option is to go for the fully restored colonial home. Of course, the price reflects the efforts put into the restoration, but these still tend to be surprisingly affordable. Some times its nice just to move in and begin enjoying life.

An old hacienda - Like the homes, these can be anything from estates abandoned for decades to those restored to the glory of the days when their owners where the masters of Mexico's rural economy. An old hacienda can be converted into a countryside estate or, as more and more people are discovering, an attractive business, such as a restaurant, hotel or wedding/event venue. Many people will pay a premium to share the most important moments of their life in a place that allows them to step back in time a few centuries.

Modern homes with colonial features - This option is becoming increasingly attractive. Mexicans have continued to use many traditional features even in their most recently built homes, such as arches and talavera tiles. Modern homes can include the bright colors, the rugged wooden beams and similar features. At the same time, wiring, phone and internet, double-pane windows, air conditioners and the like are built into a structure designed for them. One excellent example of this option is Hacienda del Rio in Playa del Carmen, which is located in a nice gated community near the beach.

If you decide to go for colonial, it's good to know that you have options available!
