If you go to Tulum, it doesn't take long to realize that most of the beachfront is protected land, and much of the rest is taken up by eco hotels and resorts. So, what if you want a beachfront home in Tulum? Or what about a condo?

There are options! You can start by exploring the various property choices in Tulum, here. But it's also important to be aware of where the options are so you know what area's you're looking for.

The Village of Akumal

Near Tulum there is a small, quaint and upscale village directly on the beachfront, called Akumal. This village has real focus on ecology, and somewhat in contrast to the upscale nature of the homes, the village center is rather rustic and very nicely integrated with nature. This village offers many homes and condos directly on the beach which give residents a comfortable, quiet and private lifestyle surrounded by beaches, nature and other beautiful homes.

Akumal has some basic services - 2 small grocery stores and some nice cafes and restaurants - but more importantly it is only a very short drive to the every increasing number of services in the town of Tulum itself, and not that much further from the cities of Playa del Carmen and Cancun.

South of Tulum, in the Middle of Nature

Heading south out of the village of Tulum, there are also beautiful homes available, but here more of the eco, off-the-grid style. Some of these can be found directly within the biosphere reserve of Sian Ka'an, surrounded by pure nature.

Now, “off-the-grid” can mean rustic, but that is not necessarily the case. There are some very beautiful, upscale homes which are off-the-grid, functioning on solar and wind power. Many of these are also designed to optimize the balance between natural light and maximized coolness, by increasing natural airflow, for example.

A Walk Away

Within the growing town of Tulum, there are also options for condos, lots and homes a walk or short bike ride away from the beach. The trendy community of Aldea Zama stands out especially, being the closest residential master development to the beach, and also offering a very comfortable, natural and modern lifestyle, with its own village center and services. The town center of Tulum is likewise a bike ride away from this community.

So, while homes directly on the sand of the beach are not the first thing you'll see when visiting Tulum, beachfront properties are most certainly available, as is a lifestyle near the world's finest beaches!
