If you take a walk or a drive downtown Playa del Carmen during the next few weeks, you will notice that a number of the small east-west streets, which run from the highway through downtown toward the beach, are closed off; this is for a major repaving project taking place downtown.
While there is little inconvenience (the work is going one or two streets at a time) there is a good deal of benefit for Playa del Carmen property owners. Most of the roads being repaved cross or end at Fifth Avenue, Playa del Carmen’s main downtown road, which is a pedestrian street full of great restaurants, bars, specialty shops, nicknack stores and much more. The repaving of these roads will make it easier for residents to drive down to this area and find parking and more visually pleasant to walk around.
The work currently going on is at the south part of downtown, and is progressing, street by street, northward. Just a few blocks away from where the work is going on now begins the area of downtown where there are many new condo developments. This work will have a direct benefit for the many Americans and Canadians who own Mexico condos in this part of downtown.
Over the past decade, Playa del Carmen has been one of Mexico real estate‘s biggest success stories, with a community that is growing faster than any other in Mexico, and most in Latin America. With the growth, there has also been a commitment from the municipal, state and federal governments to provide infrastructure expansion and improvements to match the growth and meet the needs of an expanding expat community.
Other ongoing examples include the new highway bridges (soon to be completed) and the “arco vial” arch road, with a beautiful palm-lined boulevard, by-passing the downtown part of the highway the same stretch where the bridges are, (recently completed).
So, for the moment you might see a lot of road-related work going on in Playa del Carmen; very shortly you will be enjoying brand-new roads and bridges, and ongoing easy access to the world’s favorite beach!
