On Febrary 6, 2012, the second stage of the new boardwalk for the beachfront town of Progreso in Yucatan saw its grand opening to the public! The boardwalk (“Malecon†in Spanish) will add value, both in terms of lifestyle and monetary worth to Yucatan homes for sale in the town.
Progreso, a charming little town with a strong local character, is located on the north shore of the Yucatan Peninsula, about 3 hours away from the more famous resort cities of Cancun, and about 30 minutes away from the classic colonial city of Merida.
The total investment into the boardwalk project was $155 million pesos (about $12 million USD), $64 million of which were for the recently completed second stage. The hope is that the brand new, stylish boardwalk will make the town more attractive for tourists and for international real estate buyers – and from what I’ve seen, it looks like it will work.
The project included a stylish concrete walkway, light fixtures, a flagpole 15 meters (160 feet) in height, walkway benches, public restrooms and the remodeling of the traffic circle and plaza nearby. The new boardwalk extends for about 3 miles.
The walkway, which spans then entire Historic Center, is also expected to add appeal to this part of the town, which combines old architecture with local markets and nice little restaurants, bars and cafes.
Progreso welcomes waves of cruise ship tourists on a regular basis, but in the in-between times is a quiet fishing town with a small, close-knit community of long-time U.S. and Canadian expats. Many Americans and Canadians like to buy old homes a block or two away from the beach and renovated them. Mexico beachfront for sale in the town also includes modern condos and new homes, just outside of town.
