Let me start with two important points:
- You should be considering special design for retirement needs
- You do have the option of designing your Mexico retirement property, even if you don’t have it built custom
Retirement Design
“But I’m only 57,” you’re thinking, “I don’t need a home with special access.”
The truth is that those days are still a ways off, but once you start life on Mexico’s beaches or quaint colonial towns, it’s likely you’ll be around for a while, especially once you hit full time retirement. Creating a design that is comfortable now and will be easily accessible in the future – even if it is the distant future – will make things much easier as time goes on.
Recently, I was reading an article about “Universal Design”, which basically means you make a design which is comfortable and practical for all stages of life, from young mothers with toddlers to the elderly with special access needs. The design applies to homes and communities alike.
While you probably don’t need to think about the young mothers part too much, maybe the kids will be visiting with the grandkids …
It may also turn out that you sell your property before reaching the need for special design, but even in that case, a good retirement-friendly design will hold more appeal for a growing number of retiring Baby Boomers moving to Mexico.
Your Participation in the Design
There is the possibility that you will find a Mexico home for sale or condo already designed for retirees. However, this is not yet very common here, not even in key expat destinations.
What’s far more common is that you can participate in the design of your Mexico condos.
“But don’t they just come they way they design them ahead of time?”
Yes and no. If you buy a completed property, then modifications will be your responsibility, they will be more work and perhaps even limited in the extent in which they can be carried out.
However, if you buy pre-construction, you can approach your developer and negotiate modifications. The earlier you buy, the more flexibility you will have, sometimes even having influence over common area design.
Some developments actually have this built into their sales approach.
For example, Hacienda del Rio in Playa del Carmen is already designed to be retirement friendly with wide doors and a very spacious bathroom with a bench in the shower.
Most importantly, however, is that custom design is a part of the package. When you choose to buy a home or condo, you sit down with a representative and go through exactly how you need or want it to be.
Talk to Your Agent
Like always, my final point is just this; if you are buying for long-term retirement, even you are still only in your 50s or 60s, be sure to tell your agent and find a development that has retirement friendly features and where you can participate in adding more to the design.
