For many of our clients retiring or having a second home in Mexico is an easy choice. Amazing beaches, low cost of both living and Mexico real estate as well as the vibrant Mexican culture are some of the main reasons people have in mind when they move south.
Some of our client’s main concerns are about bringing their pets into the country safely. We can reassure you that this is not only possible, but also quite simple.
Top Mexico Real Estate has an information kit that will guide you through this process, but in general terms you will only need a letter from your vet stating the pet is in good health and has no current infections or diseases, as well as the up to date vaccination card.
We want to help our clients to ease the transition for their pets with these tips from experts:
- Update the id tags on your pet: Make sure to have a good collar and tags with your updated contact information, if you don’t have this details yet, maybe it’s a good idea to use a friend or family member telephone number and your email account.
- Get a box with all the important items for your pet: food, prescriptions, toys and make sure to have them handy as soon as you get to your new home, this will help your pet to feel there is something familiar in this new and exciting environment.
- Find out about your new home: if you are moving to a condo you might have restricted space for your dog, find out if there is a dog park or a park nearby. Keep in mind that parks have limited space, and it’s uncommon to have dog parks in Mexico so it’s important to consider this if you have a pet that requires lots of physical activity.
- Secure your pet in your vehicle: if you are driving down to Mexico, make sure to have a kennel, leash and whatever needed to travel safely with your pet.
- During your move-in day: make sure to leave your pet in a safe enclosed space, like a bathroom or washing room and leave plenty of entertainment, food and water. The noise, excitement and new faces can be too much for your pet to handle, or someone might leave a door open and let your pet escape.
- Dog owners, walk your dog: this is the easiest way to reduce anxiety and give your dog some reference points to find its new home.
- Know when to leave your dog behind: some of the main beaches in the Mayan Riviera don’t allow dogs, inquire about the places you are planning to visit to find out about their policies.
- Give back: Meet other pet owners and join efforts with the local charities supporting stray dogs and cats. This is an excellent opportunity to meet new people with shared interests and to help local dogs and cats to find new homes.
