For those of you living in the Tulum area like the beautiful Condos at Puerta Zama, there is nothing like a day trip to the Sian Ka’an Natural Reserve. Sian Ka’an means “where the sky is born†in the Mayan language, and it makes all the sense in the world once you experience a sunrise at the beach.
Sian Ka’an was established on as a natural reserve on January 20, 1986 by presidential decree; under President Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado. UNESCO joined the Mexican government efforts and declared the reserve a World Heritage in 1987.
Sian Ka’an has an approximate area of 530,000 hectares and spans 120 kilometers from north to south; which is more or less a third of the Caribbean coast of Mexico.
The reserve has several restrictions on human activities, and an area of nearly 700,000 acres is preserved mainly for research purposes. There are also buffer zones that contemplate human activities with low environmental impact as well as sustainable development. The estimated human population Sian Ka’an is 2000 inhabitants, most of which are located in the coastal area, especially in the fishing villages of Punta Allen and Punta Herrero. Approximately 1% of the area of the reserve is privately owned.
The northern part of Sian Ka’an has many ancient channels that cross the lagoons and mangrove between the Mayan cities of Tulum and Muyil. These channels kept communication and trade opportunities to coastal settlements, and gave the Mayans the opportunity to exchange products and services.
Fishing has been a traditional economic activities in the area, there is plenty of species that live in these waters such as: Lobster, grouper, nurse shark, hammerhead, black tipped shark, and snapper. Tourism is another source of income for fishermen in Sian Ka’an, as the locals are allowed to offer tours to the reef and lagoon system. Something interesting about the communities living in this area, is their interest in offering sustainable tourism services, working together as a group to benefit local families and preserve the environment.
