A recent nationwide survey in Mexico has named Merida as the top place in which to live. Conducted by the Office of Strategic Communications, the Quality of Life Index allows ranking of the best and worst cities to live in the country. Merida, which is the capital and most populous city in the state of Yucatan, got 83.3 out of 100. The score is based on resident’s views about things such as housing, recreational opportunities, culture, beauty and quality of life. So what makes this such a great place to live?
Merida is a city that is distinct from the rest of Mexico. Unlike most other colonial cities in Mexico, it´s a place that is full of diversity. The locals, known as “Meridanosâ€, are proud of their unique blends of culture which are exclusive to this region. Every night of the week you will find some kind of entertainment or event that may include concerts, festivals, art openings or parades. You can feel the pulse of daily life everywhere that locals meet and engage with one other.
The weather in Merida, summer heat and humidity are as much as part of the landscape as the rich colonial architecture. The rainy season runs from May to October each year. Merida combines its hot climate with thunderstorms and humidity ensues. The humidity wanes in the dry season, bringing a welcome change of climate to residents and visitors alike.
Despite a lower cost of living compared to the U.S. or Canada, there are many cultural and medical amenities, as well as modern-day conveniences and services, which other similar-sized colonial cities often lack. This makes for very comfortable living arrangements. Merida real estate prices are also lower than other popular tourist destinations in Mexico.
Not only is Merida a great place to live, it´s increasing in popularity as a place in which to retire. There is a great mix of affordable and authentic Mexican living and a culturally sophisticated environment. It´s remarkable that after decades of economic decline following the Mexican revolution, which took a huge toll on this region, Merida has once again been transformed and is adapting itself to the new economies of the twenty-first century.
