Akumal is located 40 km south of Playa del Carmen. It has an expat residential neighborhood full of single family homes and some beachfront condominiums that were built back in the ´80s and ´90s. The atmosphere here is very tropical and surrounded by jungle. Although many of the houses do not have direct access to the beach and are in rocky areas, there are parts of Akumal which contain white sand beaches on the Caribbean Sea.
There are many things to do in Akumal, with an abundance of water sports that take advantage of being on site of the world’s second-largest barrier reef. With so many things to do here it’s no wonder that people keep flocking to this place. Below are 3 recommendations of places you can visit here and what they offer.
Cenote Santa Cruz
The Yucatan Peninsula is full of naturally occurring sinkholes called cenotes, which lead to a connected underground river system. For tourists they offer a unique experience exploring the subterranean world beneath the Riviera Maya. The stalactite and stalagmite formations are incredible in design, with some of them over 50 million years old. For those wanting to journey inside this cenote there are tour operators who are happy to take you inside.
Akumal Beach
This is a very popular beach in the Riviera Maya. The word Akumal is Mayan for “land of turtlesâ€, and for a very good reason. In this place you can get up close to these fascinating creatures. It’s important however to not trample any of the raised sand mounds since many turtles like to make their nests underneath. Since this is a beachfront community you will find an abundance of water sports, kayaking, snorkeling or diving to explore the reef and wildlife. If you prefer something less physically strenuous you can always go for a walk on the beach, or just relax and read a book.
Eco Parks
For something a little different, consider visiting one of the ecological parks in Akumal. Aktun-Chen Natural Park was founded in 1977 and is a 400-acre rainforest containing whitetail deer, spider monkeys and lowland paca. It offers forest tours, picturesque hiking trails and rare animals that roam around free. There is also an old cave that extends for over 700 yards, ending with a spectacular cenote.
Another option is Xel-Ha Ecological Park. Its name means “where the water is born†in the Mayan language, and it’s a stunning natural place that you must see. It has trails where you can bicycle through the jungle, snorkel in the lagoon, use zip-lines, do five-meter-high jumps, or play rope games. There are special games in the children’s playground and four restaurants to choose from when you get hungry. A great thing about this park is that it’s all-inclusive, with your ticket giving you access to plenty of activities, food and drinks during your stay.
As you see, whether it’s for retirement or vacationing, Akumal has plenty of activities for you to have a great time!
