According to TripAdvisor, the Riviera Maya is the most popular destination in Mexico, leaving behind another best seller and better known tourist favorite: Cancun. The Riviera Maya has many attractions: beaches, archeological zones, top hotels and restaurants; the best is that each of the different areas and beaches have their own vibe and you get to enjoy different areas on the same trip.
Over time, the Riviera has been evolving to offer its visitors a great experience. Regardless of your budget, there are options for everybody. In the Riviera Maya you can find places like Playa del Carmen with a good mix of relaxation and fiesta, as well as quiet spots ideal to spend time with the family.
If you think you need a little more convincing, we prepared a list of 5 Reasons to visit the Riviera Maya on the Fall.
1. Your dollars will stretch a long way
If you are travelling on a budget and are considering spending this fall on a staycation, this news is going to make you change your mind! Currently a dollar is worth almost 20 pesos, which means that you can still afford to stay in a nice hotel, have margaritas and enjoy everything the Riviera has to offer.
If you are wondering, how much things cost in Mexico? What can I afford with my dollars? Here is a brief list, so you can get an idea
1 USD | Can get you a beer. Yes… that is 20 pesos for a beer in a convenience store. In a bar you could get it for 1.5 or 2 USD. |
5 USD | For this amount you can enjoy a simple meal of tacos, or a combo in a fast food restaurant, including drink and fries. |
15 USD | Always wanted a massage at the beach? This is your chance! For about 300 pesos you get a relaxing massage at the beach. |
50 USD | This will cover a nice dinner for two in a nice restaurant on 5th Avenue, including drinks, coffee or even dessert. |
2. Enjoy EVERYTHING for a fraction of the cost
September and October are the slowest months of the year in the Riviera Maya; kids are back to school, it’s too early for the snowbirds to arrive, etc. This means that everyone is willing to give the few tourists in the area a good discount on everything: from hotels, restaurants, tours… and those savings will allow you to have a better quality holiday for less money.
Just take a look at the popular Xcaret Park, they are currently offering a whopping 25% discount if you buy entrances for two parks… and kids under 5 years old get free admission!
3. The weather is cool
The Fall is simply one of the best times to visit the Riviera Maya, first of all… the weather is starting to cool down. Visiting outdoor attractions get a little bit more bearable, the rainy season is almost over and you can just take all the beauty in and… r-e-l-a-x.
Even though the rainy season is not officially over until the last day of October, most of the heavy rain happens between May and September. Even if you have a rainy day, there are cenotes and underground river tours that won’t be affected by the bad weather.
4. Join the fun!
There are a couple of fun events during the fall in the Riviera Maya, and here is a guide of activities that you can’t miss!
Halloween on 5th Avenue: This is a cool tradition that shows the mix of cultures that exists in the Riviera Maya, as you will see locals and visitors joining together to have fun during Halloween. You are allowed to use a costume, give candy to the kids, go to a costume contest on a club… the idea is to enjoy the celebration.
Day of the dead: This is a unique Mexican celebration, where the living celebrates the lives of those that are gone. The Mayan Culture has its own way to celebrate the Day of the Dead, and the call it Hanal Pixan; if you are interested you could even go on a tour to a Mayan Village to be part of this special event.
Thanksgiving in the Caribbean: We bet this is a surprise! But it is possible to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving dinner in the Mayan Riviera. There is wide variety of restaurants offering this delicious dinner, from the most traditional recipes to a little bit of novelty; we are sure you’ll find something to make your palate happy.
