The title, “Things you don’t know about Mexico†will include a four-part series that will talk about its unique culture, things you don’t really expect, and why Mexico captivates so many of you who want to stay or retire there. This first segment will highlight Mexico’s people and their characteristics.
Talking with people who haven’t yet taken the time to visit Mexico seems to have mixed views. Some see it as if they are down and out and held captive in their own environment, or forced to live in poverty with no chance of excelling. Others see them as being lazy, uninviting and taking siestas all day. Several individuals actually ask if they still ride on burros and live in adobe houses with no running water or electricity.
Our friend, Anthony Scopel, writer and photographer for the travel site “You, Me and The Doc“, shared with us his recently adventure in Playa del Carmen. He mentions that in the the early stages of his new found home, it took some adjustments while keeping an open mind. Anthony says Mexican people are very talented in learning the English language. Also, that it is not hard at all to find someone who speaks good English. In addition, he estimates that around 60% of the local community spoke English at some level of understanding.
To tell the truth, Mexican people have life all figured out. They live simply, are hard workers, put family first and really enjoy life as it was meant. Anthony also mentions that he and his wife had a chance to get to know, understand, and make friends with lots of the Mexican people. Even with difficulties communicating, they managed to laugh, tell jokes and enjoy one another’s company.
The restaurants, shops and street vendors go to great lengths to provide great service, superb food and a comfortable experience. It comes from their hearts to make people feel at home. Waiters remember your name, ask for ordering habits, and also where you’d like to sit.
The street vendors will come up and ask you to buy their products or services – it’s their job. All you have to do is simply say, “No gracias†and they will leave you alone. But not without saying to remember them if you change your mind! When visiting the doctor and dentist, the office help is always friendly and truly concerned with how you are doing. They offer any help they could and not always for a price.
“A glowing smile, a great attitude towards life and an appreciation for what they do have”
Communities in Mexico aren’t much different than any other community in any part of the United States. Whenever you pass a shop, restaurant or other establishment, people call out to you and wave hi! Many of them don’t have the latest gadgets in hand, newest cars or perfect apartments or homes to go to. They don’t have retirement accounts, easy to come – by credit cards, or a safety net for job security. But what they have is a glowing smile, a great attitude towards life, and an appreciation for what they do have.
In Mexico, you will surely make lots of casual friendships, and be ready to learn a little Spanish! You will always figure a way to communicate in broken language, either English or Spanish. Mexicans are so easy going, so be prepared to stay in contact through social media and email, since you will surely miss some of your friends. When your time to leave comes, they will wish you well and will hope to see you come back soon. Mexicans treat people kindly, you will actually be amazed at how much you will receive back. Being kind is one of the characteristics of Mexico’s unique culture.
The Mexican people genuinely possess a very caring demeanor and will offer their help at any given moment. Are there bad people in Mexico? There sure are. Just like in every other country on the planet. We shouldn’t judge a bushel of apples when we find a few rotten ones. If that were the case, every country in the world would be classified as having horrible people.
Try visiting Mexico and get to know its beautiful and kind people, soak up in its unique culture. On the other hand, fall in love with the beautiful white sandy beaches and the delicious Mexican food everyone talks about!
