Tipping is a controversial topic. No matter where you travel. Everybody is always wondering what is the appropriate percentage that you should tip. Honestly there is a standard that most travellers try and stick to. However, it all depends on the personal preference and your experience in general. If you had a wonderful experience with that specific restaurant or server, it is your discretion as to how much they deserve. In Mexico, the appropriate amount to tip – like we mention depending on your experience, would be between 10-15% on top of the end amount.
When you are tipping around 15% that is a good number to go by if the service was great. You have to remember that these servers are trying their best to make you have a great experience and sometimes if the food doesn’t turn out the way you were hoping it would- that is not the servers fault. They will do all they can to change that and make sure you have a wonderful experience at that place.
Remember you’re tipping because you had a good experience and you left happy
Again, some people feel like they should tip their hairstylist, tour guides, taxi and shuttle drivers and so on. This is true if you had a good experience. You might be thinking: “well, I paid that shuttle driver for the duration of the trip he was driving me”, but at the end of the day, how was their service? Did they put a smile on your face? Did they get you from point A to point B safely? That’s everything that you have to take into account. You’re tipping because you had a good experience and you left happy. It is not something you have to do by know means, but it is greatly appreciated.
In Mexico, wages are minimal; it’s a known fact. The servers work for less money than what you could imagine. So, everything that they receive after is why they are working in the industry. Don’t put out more than you can afford of course. You might often see kids coming up to you in restaurants, selling bracelets that they have made to earn a couple extra dollars at the end of the day. Yes at the time, they may seem like they are troubling you when you are trying to enjoy your food, but remember- these kids are out trying to make enough money to eat and survive.
Servers rely on your support to earn a living!
Things are a lot different here than in Canada and America and most places around the world. So all in all, it’s totally based on experience and how you feel in the moment. If you want to tip 50% then you tip 50%. If you want to tip 10% then tip 10%. Just keep in mind that these servers rely on your support to earn a living. Every little bit counts here in Mexico and servers will appreciate it. Your generosity does not go unnoticed and it is good karma to you!
