This weekend the island of Cozumel and Xcaret Park hosted The Sacred Mayan Journey, a sacred ritual which has been performed since ancient times. The Sacred Maya Journey is a recreation of a part of Mayan history and culture and it includes rituals, dances and ceremonies.  This year the canoers departed from Xcaret Park and arrived at Chankanaab in Cozumel Island. The following day they boarded their canoes once again and ended the journey with a return trip to Xcaret.
The Maya used to cross the sea on their canoes to Cozumel Island to worship the Ixchel goddess. The island goes back a long way and was thought to have been settled by the Mayan civilization, who worshiped it as a place of fertility. It´s just a short 30Âminute ferry ride to Playa del Carmen where local residents enjoy the resort lifestyle amongst natural beauty and survives on tourism. The island has white-sand beaches and crystal clear blue waters, with many activities to take part in such snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing.
Cozumel has the second biggest reef barrier in the world called the Mesoamerican Reef, which make for an incredible underwater life. There is also an abundance of shopping available and many places to get a bite to eat among the many restaurants.
Xcaret has always been a main shipping port of pilgrimages to Cozumel, so it was appropriate to begin the 10th Sacred Mayan Journey here. It was recently recognized as the best international theme park and the best water park. It won the 2016 Travvy Award held in New York City and it reached the finals along with Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan for the category of Best International Theme Park.
It´s easy to see why it has received such accoldaes. It´s located approx 15 minutes by car from the entrance to Playacar Phase II south gated entrance, across from the Centro Maya shopping centre. Residents of Playacar can take a bike path from the gated community Ìs entrance on the highway all the way to the inside of the park. It´s a convenient way to get there and provides ample opportunity to meet the residents of the area, like the iguanas and birds that can be found along the way. Once there visitors can enjoy the many activities such as exploring underground rivers, swimming with turtles or taking an ATV ride.
