Crime in Mexico – Does it Affect Real Estate Owners?

Mexico SafeWhile a client who is approaching you as their trusted broker to refer them to a broker of similar quality in Mexico is likely already comfortable with the idea of living in Mexico, it’s entirely possible that they bring up some concerns about life in Mexico.

A couple of days back, I wrote about bureaucracy.  However, a far more common and important concern is that of security, safety and crime.  If your client asks you about this point, it’s important to remember three main points:

1. The Image of Crime in Mexico is Overblown

While crime most certainly exists, including the drug wars and related conflicts, it is very much overblown by the media.  The same is true of the extent to which it spreads through the country.  Many parts of the country are very low crime and unaffected by the drug wars.

2. Many Parts of Mexico are Safer than Many Parts of the U.S.

While the overall crime rate in Mexico is most certainly higher, there are many parts of Mexico, like Merida or Lake Chapala, where the crime rate and safety in general is much better than in parts of the U.S. like Washington D.C. or even Florida, and more comparable to the safer parts of the U.S., like Wyoming.

3. Unfortunate Events Can Happen Anywhere

The bottom line is that could be the victim of crime anywhere – even in the safest places.  When people hear one story, they assume that it’s that way for everyone.

Choosing a safe area in Mexico and using basic common sense, Americans and Canadians can live as safely as (and perhaps even more so than) back home.
