Where Can I Give My Clients the Real Story on Mexico?

Published on: Jun 04 2013 by Thomas Lloyd

We all know that people get a distorted or at least exaggerated story about Mexico just about everywhere they look. We can tell them this. But in the end, people will want to see the other side of the story – but not from us. After all, they may think that we’re just showing the “rosy” side and distorting it the other way.

So, here are some neutral resources we can use to show people that investment, life and travel in Mexico are safe:

Safety living in Mexico1. Expats

Expats who have lived here a long time write blogs. Most of them have no vested interest in “proving” anything about Mexico, and will actually quite willingly go on rants about what they don’t like. But at the same time, their day-to-day stories show that they walk around safely and calmly, and that life here is normal. For example, take a look at this blog by an expat in Cancun.

2. Forums

Again, some people in these forums can be very negative – often even brazingly so. But, likewise, even the most disgruntled expats are still living here, and still walk down the street to drink beer at their expat hangout bar – without fear of having to dodge bullets. Their stories make this clear. In fact, their negativity can even help to drive home the point that they are being honest and real. Of course, plenty of contributors are very happy and optimistic about life in Mexico. For example, see Playa Info Forum.

3. Vacationers and Snowbirds

If you can connect them to Americans or Canadians right at home who spend a lot of time in Mexico, this is a powerful message; “We go to Mexico twice a year, and we’ve always felt safe …”

Living in Mexico4. The News

Now and then a reporter gets the story straight about Mexico. Usually they take the opportunity to chastise their peers who follow the media bandwagon in distorting the Mexico’s image. For example, see this story from a reporter from Calgary who vacationed in Mexico, and – as he points out – didn’t get killed.

These resources are useful because they are from neutral, outside sources, and from a variety of perspectives. Unfortunately, the good stories and real life experiences they share rarely make it anywhere near the top headlines where the drug-cartel violence goes; but just for that reason, it’s good to make people aware that there are many good stories about Mexico, and not just from hotel owners and real estate agents!
