Fishing in the Riviera Maya: Locations

If you want to stay away from larger tourist destinations like Playa del Carmen or Cancun, we have three suggestions for fishing destinations:

Puerto Aventuras

Puerto Aventuras is a gated community located halfway between the popular tourist destinations Playa del Carmen and Tulum. This is a wonderful place for sport fishing, it also has its own marina and most of the fishing areas are very close; forget about long trips into the sea!

The best time to go fishing is from March to June, but there are always fish and fishing tours with year round success rates. If someone in your group is not into fishing, there is also the option of snorkeling in the nearby reef; an ideal activity for kids.

Some of the fish that can be found in these waters are: bonefish, tarpon, permit, jack and barracuda.

Visiting the Sian Ka’an reserve is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the local

wildlife as well as the ancient Mayan civilization. Most of these tours are run by experienced guides that also live in the Sian Ka’an Reserve.

Fishing in the Riviera Maya provides year round options, whether it’s deep sea fishing or fly fishing, fishing for sport or fishing for your dinner, you are sure to catch a good time.

La Ruta de los Cenotes, off the beaten path adventures!

La Ruta de los Cenotes is a wonderful option if you are visiting the Riviera Maya and want to experience something amazing and forget about the tourist traps. This unassuming road offers many pleasant surprises for those who dare to do something different.

La Ruta de los Cenotes: How to get there?

La Ruta de los Cenotes is the name given the road that connects the town of Puerto Morelos and Leona Vicario, in the southern state of Quintana Roo. It is located off the 307 highway, approximately 20 minutes south from the Cancun International Airport.

To get there pass the town of Puerto Morelos until you see a rock arch on the right hand side, that is the entrance to La Ruta de los Cenotes. On that road you will see signs for different cenotes or sinkholes, you just need to pick one and experience a once in a lifetime adventure.

 photo ruta-cenotes_zps6e75ce7c.png

La Ruta de los Cenotes: What is a Cenote?

A Cenote or Sinkhole is a body of water that can be found underground, these are the only source of fresh water for the whole Yucatan Peninsula and they were considered sacred by the Mayans.

The Yucatan Peninsula is formed of limestone and when it rains the water seeps through the rock and forms underground rivers, all of these rivers run towards the sea. Since the water in these rivers are never touched by the sun, they completely lack coloration from algae or organic matter; hence the amazing colors of the water that can be seen all over the Riviera Maya.

 photo mar_zps32db7702.png

La Ruta de los Cenotes, off the beaten path adventures!

We have to confess that after so many years living in the Riviera Maya, we haven’t been able to explore all the cenotes in the area. There are so many! But some of the cenotes are so beautiful, I often dream of going back.

Our staff’s favorite is:

Cenote Siete Bocas:

Ruta de los Cenotes

Carretera Puerto Morelos- Leona Vicario Km. 15.5

Cost: 150 Locals, 200 nationals, 250 Foreigners * MXN Peso

We went to this cenote with some friends visiting from America, we just drove and decided to visit a few cenotes in one day. The place is run by a local family, with a very basic infrastructure, it is possible to rent swimming jackets and snorkel gear; but you can also bring your own.

Apart from a family, most of the bocas or entrances to the cenote were empty.  We picked one and down we went on some very ancient and creaky wooden stairs. My friends were panicking about the lack of restrooms and dressing rooms, but once we saw the water; they forgot all about that: it was magnificent!

Imagine swimming in a liquid topaz, the light beams coming in through little holes in the roof; forming beams of light in the water. It was paradise! If you decide to visit this cenote, it is better to bring food and drinks with you; as there is nothing to eat.

So go on and have some fun, explore our favorite spot!

Medical Tourism In Mexico

Medical tourism in Mexico has been a popular option for North Americans for many years. With the never ending increase of insurance prices and copays, many people look for cheaper alternatives south of the border.

Mexico has many specialized medical tourism destinations, where tourist attractions and medical care come together to address medical issues.  One of the main characteristics of medical tourism in Mexico is the highly qualified doctors and nurses as well as excellent hospital infrastructure.

 photo DoctorwithClipboard_zpsf56ce5ee.jpg

Medical Tourism in Mexico: What procedures can I have done?

Medical tourism in Mexico is a great option for people looking for medical services, either because they are out of reach back in their home countries or because they are looking to cut expensive medical bills. Checkups, preventive care, specialized surgery and the recovery process; everything monitored by warm, professional doctors in Mexico.

Some of the most popular medical services performed by medical tourism in Mexico are:

  • Plastic and cosmetic surgery (liposuction, face, mammoplasty)
  • Dentistry (Cosmetic and Reconstructive)
  • Cardiology / cardiac surgery (bypass, valve replacement)
  • Orthopedics surgery (hip replacement or knee joint surgery, arthroplasty)
  • Bariatric surgery (gastric bypass, gastric banding)
  • Fertility (IVF)
  • Transplantation of cells, tissues and organs
  • Eye Surgery
  • Diagnostics and tests

 photo DentistwithPatient_zpsc151fffe.jpg

Medical Tourism in Mexico:  International Accreditations

The best way to ensure you get the best medical care possible is to do research and make sure you are being treated in a safe hospital or clinic.

Mexico has 9 hospitals and 1 medical center that comply with accreditation from the Joint Commission International, which is internationally recognized as a symbol of quality that reflects the commitment of an organization to meet performance standards. The Federal Ministry of Health has certified 105 hospitals, 98 of which are certified to international standards.

Medical Tourism in Mexico:  Quality and Low Cost

Mexico is an attractive country for health care for many reasons: the quality of medical services, the wide range of destinations, internationally accredited hospitals and the cost of medical care. It is observed that the main treatments offered include dental, ophthalmic, orthopedic and rehabilitation; and scheduled surgeries, plastic and aesthetic, which can become 60% to 80% cheaper than in the United States.

table

Why spend thousands of dollars back home if you can get the same procedure for a fraction of the cost. The key is to find the right accredited professional, do research, and look for internationally recommended hospitals and doctors in order to ensure your health and safety.

This might be more difficult than you think, medical tourism is not regulated. The Center of Disease Control (CDC) makes some recommendations to people considering medical tourism. Once that you have decided to go ahead with your medical tourism trip, there are plenty of Medical Tourism agencies willing to do the arrangements for you.

Night of the Blue Crab; Join the Conservation Effort!

Every year around the last few days of September and the first few days of October, along the magnificent views of the moon; Cancun gets a special visitor. Thousands of giant blue crabs (Cardisoma guanhumi), try to cross the dangerous path that divides the Nichupte Lagoon from the beach.

If you have ever driven the road that goes across the touristic area in Cancun, I think you have a good idea of the catastrophic results of thousands of crab trying to cross that very busy street. Environmentalist, government agencies and the general public decided to work together in a campaign to help blue crabs have a safe journey.

 photo CrabHotel_zps184138b7.jpg

The Blue crab protection campaign was founded in 1991, it is a very popular activity among families with kids and all sorts of volunteers. The amount of crabs coming out, depends on the amount of rain, the rainier the season; the more crabs make the treacherous journey.

Get to know the blue crab

The blue crab is one of the biggest specimens, they can grow as big as 14 inches. Adults have blue-gray color, while the young are usually orange or brown, and weight up to a pound or more.

 photo BlueCrab_zpsa6e36987.jpg

Blue crabs are herbivorous, as most of the species feed on fruits, coconuts and mangrove leaves. They often live in muddy beaches, mangrove swamps, coconut trees and can be found inland. Crabs tend to dig caves and hide during the day and at night they leave their burrows and are very active.

The reproductive cycle is closely linked to seasonal weather patterns and moon phases. With the arrival of heavy rains during the rainy season in the tropics, the crabs begin migration. The males mate with mature females during the months of July, August and September. Most females can be seen carrying their eggs externally. After about two weeks the eggs hatch and should be released in salt water, the typical development time from birth to the first crab stage adult is approx. 42 days.

What can I do to help?
This Blue crab species is endangered, the fast growth of Cancun, amount of hotels and cars makes this trip extremely dangerous. Environmentalist believe that the loss of free beaches and hatching areas can affect the population of these attractive species. If you would like to volunteer for this event registration begins at 6:30p.m. at each meeting point.

When:
October 8th, 9th and 10th
7:00 PM

Where:
The following beaches in Cancun: Playa del Niño, Playa Las Perlas, Playa El Mirador II, Punta Nizuc and Tajamar.

If you want to join the effort it is important to bring one of more of the following items:
– Flashlight
– Bait Gloves (you can find them in any hardware shop as “Guantes de Carnaza”)
– Bucket
– Dustpan
– White clothing

Celebrate Independence Day, Throw a Noche Mexicana!

One of the most exciting national holidays in Mexico is expected on midnight on September 15, to celebrate Mexico’s Independence. On the night of the September 15th, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo a catholic priest rang the bells of his church; calling the population to rise against the Spanish government and fight for independence.

Miguel Hidalgo

This was the beginning of a long and bloody fight that would last over 10 years, as the Independence was finally gained on September 27th, 1821 and wasn’t recognized by the Spanish Kingdom until 1836.

In Mexico this is one of the most important celebrations, every city in the country decorates the streets with flags, lights and other decor to commemorate the heroes that fought for freedom and equality.

Every 15th of September, in every downtown area in every city, town or village in Mexico; people gather in front of the Government Palace. There, the President, governor or mayor repeats the famous words that Miguel Hidalgo used to start the uprising, while waving the flag of Mexico.

After this ceremony, called “El Grito” traditionally there is a popular festival, if there is enough budget there is a firework show afterwards and then a musical show to enliven the fiesta.

Around the Plaza, there is vendors offering Mexican dishes such as quesadillas, gorditas, shredded chicken tacos, mole, tostadas, pozole, chalupas, bunuelos, and many others. There is also the traditional “aguas frescas” or fresh fruit juices, if you attend a private party there might be drinks like tequila, mezcal and pulque.

You might be familiar with the Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and be surprised to see that this is not such a big celebration in Mexico. Actually it is considered a bank holiday, but the fiesta will never reach the height of Independence Day or Revolution Day.

If you want to celebrate Independence Day you can prepare a Fiesta at home. In Mexico this celebrations are called “Noche Mexicana” or “Mexican Night”.

With our expert tips you too can host a Noche Mexicana!

Invite your friends and family: You can use a creative invitation to ask friends and families to join the party. Traditionally people is asked to wear Mexican costumes, there is plenty of ideas on the internet.
