Tulum’s Ever-Increasing Choices for Dining

With Tulum’s ever-increasing popularity as being a vacation destination, the demand for more restaurants and bar & grills will be on the rise as well. Travelers like to feast on local cuisines prepared with homegrown spices, vegetables, and fresh meats. Top Chefs are coming from all over Mexico as well as the world to show off their culinary talents. Tulum’s dining scene is a perfect choice for a variety of ambiances, exotic dishes, and tropical beverages. Tulum’s cuisines tend to offer a flavor and preparation style all its own.

A delicious dining spot to begin your day: Ki’bok Café Gourmet

Let’s begin with the first thing most people want in the morning and that is their java. Ki’bok Café Gourmet is a bit rustic but fits perfectly into its surroundings. The tree trunk poles support the handcrafted – wood built covering that exposes its open-air storefront. Sitting curbside, this simple but novel cafe offers crafted espressos. Also, brewed coffees from the finest organic ingredients grown in the area’s rich soil. Ki’bok also offers freshly prepared pastries and a lighter menu selection.

Most vacationers tend to wander towards the white sand beaches and beautiful turquoise Caribbean water. Tulum’s Sur 15 – from Mexico’s Federal Highway 307 to Av. Coba that turns into Sur 15, travels along the Riviera Maya’s scenic coastline. Here is where most all the waterside eateries reside. There are plenty to choose from and they all offer great views, fabulous food and designer drinks. Just point yourself in any direction along the beach and you will surely find a great place.

Zamas – The Restaurant at Zamas

There is one particular restaurant connected to a boutique hotel that was originally a coconut plantation. The Restaurant at Zamas offers many exquisite reasons to visit. This palapa style eatery offers several earthy floorings to choose from. You can bury your toes in the sand, sit up at the bar with a solid surface beneath you or relax at a table that sits on aged wooden planks. The surroundings are simple but elegant enough to satisfy any dining occasion. You can enjoy a midday appetizer or have a complete lunch. Their dinner menu includes traditional flavors with the finest local ingredients from land to sea. It’s also a perfect place to kick back with friends, family or spend the day solo enjoying what the Riviera Maya has to offer.

A notable dining experience at Arca

When evening arrives and just a few minutes away from Zamas, one of Tulum’s more notable dining experiences happens at Arca. Nestled against the Caribbean Sea and positioned amongst the jungle, makes this restaurant a favorite for locals and visitors alike. Its unique culinary entrées are chef selected daily. Choose from 5 to 6 specialty dishes with complementing sides, add an appetizer and a dessert if there is room. Arca also offers food and beverage through the day, but dining hours take precedence.

The aforementioned restaurants are just a few of many places that serve fabulous food and thirst quenching drinks. Just north of Zamas and still on the beach is Pancho Villa and to the south is Hartwood. Both eateries boast a four-star and above rating. Downtown Tulum also possesses plenty of culinary establishments. Azafran serves traditional style cuisine during breakfast and lunch hours. Sale & Pepe is located at the main intersection and is known for their pizza and other Italian dishes.

No matter where you go in Tulum, there will always be a place that will delight even the most discerning palates. Choose an atmosphere, decide on a flavor of food and drink. Then, let Tulum’s ambiance sweep you away for an experience that you will remember for a lifetime. Just imagine living in a place where dreams can come true. Think Mexico’s Riviera Maya!

Here’s a List of Activities You Can Do in Tulum

There’s no question about it. When someone hears the word Tulum, they naturally paint a picture of this beautiful beach in their head. They then think of celebrities, hippies, posh cabanas, little boutique hotels and stores and much, much more. However, there are many activities you can do that are fun and you probably wouldn’t think of off the bat. Oh, the Mayan Ruins are something you must see when you are visiting Tulum… but you obviously knew that.

So, if you’re wondering what activities you can do in Tulum, here are a few ideas to have a wonderful day in this beautiful town:

Rent a bike in Tulum

We were thinking somewhere along the lines of biking around Tulum; seeing everything there is to see and going at your own pace. You can rent a bike daily for approximately $80 pesos, which is around $5.00 USD per day. If you rent on a weekly basis, you will get a better price.

Bike ride through Coba

Nonetheless, if you wanted to go for a bike ride through the jungle, we would point you in the direction of “Coba.” Coba is an archeological site that was open for public use in 1973. Coba has many different ruins to explore around. However, they do have one incredible ruin that you are actually able to climb to the very top to see the amazing views of the jungle above the trees. When you first arrive to Coba, you have the option of renting a bike or choosing to walk. We of course recommend to rent a bike, and make your time at Coba much more adventurous and fun. At the end of the day, you are doing enough walking if you choose to walk up the ruin, so biking to the ruin could be a good choice.

Activities you can do in Tulum

Yoga

One thing that you will notice in Tulum are the Yogi’s (people who like doing yoga.) Therefore, there are a lot of yoga studios. If you have never tried Yoga before, Tulum is the place to do so. With cheap prices, and being located right on the Caribbean Sea, it will be the best experience of your life. Classes usually start around 8:30 am or evening classes around 5:00 pm.

Activities you can do in Tulum

Cenotes

What is a cenote you may be wondering?

A cenote is a sinkhole that has water underneath the hole and we now use it for swimming purposes. A cenote formed when the limestone bedrock collapsed. What an innovative idea right? Well let me tell you, the Riviera Maya is filled with all these magnificent sinkholes that make the perfect snorkeling spot.

Make sure you research ahead of time which sink hole you would like to visit and be prepared with a towel, biodegradable sunscreen, so we don’t harm the fish, and your snorkeling gear. If you have an underwater camera, you should definitely bring that along too! There are people who come to the cenotes for diving purposes. If you like diving, this would be the perfect place to do so. If you have never done it before and would like to try, the shallower waters make it less frightening. Three great cenotes you can visit are:

  1. Gran Cenote
  2. Cenote Dos Ojos
  3. Cenote Calavera

The entrance fee into the ruins is $70 pesos or around $4.00 USD per person.

The Ruins are open everyday from 8:00 am-5:00 pm. The last entrance of the day being is at 4:30 pm. We recommend arriving earlier than 4:30 pm because there is a lot of ruins to see and learn about. Some people spend hours upon hours looking around and learning about the Mayan history. It is interesting to visit because it was the only Mayan walled city built on the coast.

This place is truly magical, and the history is unbelievable

Knowing that Mayans used to live in this ‘city’ will completely amaze you. We also recommend hiring a guide to explain to you everything you would ever want to know about the ruins and the history of the Mayans. These guides are well educated and will be able to answer you questions. You can hire a guide at the entrance of the ruins at a negotiable price, depending on the season and the demand. If you do not want to hire a guide, there are boards with useful information you can read all along the ruins.

Some recommendations

  • The best way to get to the reserve is by car or motorbike. Public transportation is scarce, and finding a taxi to go back to Tulum can be a challenge, so don’t risk getting stranded there.
  • Plan ahead and carry everything that you will need to make your trip prosperous. Include a mosquito repellent, enough water, food and snacks, and of course, a camera so you can keep all the memories from this fantastic paradise… and it’s even better if you have a waterproof camera!
  • Be conscious and respect the environment. The unique and incomparable biodiversity found here must be kept clean and every visitor must respect the environment. If coming here is in your plans, help us to conserve this World Heritage site!
  • Be careful. Even when the road has a good share of traffic, the beaches at the reserve are almost empty. Swim carefully and avoid risks; if you find yourself in trouble, finding help can take some time.
  • Some areas of the lagoon are known for being home of crocodiles. If you book a tour through the lagoon, make sure to double check with your guide if it’s safe to swim before jumping out of the boat!

Live an eco-sustainable experience and have fun in a different and unique way in the Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an!

Ideas for Rainy Days

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing…– Billy Connelly

As we all know Playa del Carmen is known for its beautiful white beaches and sunny days. But with the recent storms and with the promise of more upcoming rain a question arises: what is there to do in Playa del Carmen when you can’t be outside? Surprisingly Playa del Carmen still has a lot to offer.

Here in Playa del Carmen there is a number of malls that may not be as big as you are used to in the United States or Canada but are great for an enjoyable way to pass a rainy day.

One of the main malls is Plaza Las Americas, located north of Playa del Carmen has many department stores, a grocery store, Sears and even a Sally’s. For entertainment Plaza Las Americas has a 12 theater cinema with many movies in English to choose from and a small casino and video arcade.

Closer to the center of Playa del Carmen on the highway towards Tulum you will find the Centro Maya mall, this mall is quite small but it does have Mexican known stores, a grocery store and a cinema next to the food court that shows movies in both English and Spanish.

If you are feeling brave and think you can make it shop to shop through the showers the Fifth Avenue has 2 malls, the newest is La Quinta. This 3 level modern mall (partially outdoor) has many well-known shops that include American Eagle, Forever 21, Victoria Secret and brand sport shops plus more.

The second shopping area on the Fifth Avenue, Paseo del Carmen is at the entrance of Playacar Phase 1, the south end of the Fifth Avenue. At this open air mall all of the department stores are next to each other if do need to make a mad dash between showers to get to the next store. This quaint shopping area carries on the cobblestone pavement and is the home to many stores for all ages such as Zara, Diesel, Ultrafemme, jewelry stores and even a Harley Davidson shop.

If you are not in the mood for shopping and the storm has settled why not head to beach with your favorite Starbucks coffee for some easy exercise to listen to the roaring waves come in. While you out for your leisurely stroll you will see many surfers on the beach. As you know this is a highly unusual sighting for Playa del Carmen and this is the only time you will see people surfing since the water is normally calm, but on these rare occasions when the heavy rain comes it also brings these huge amazing waves that surfers cannot help to take advantage of.

In the end we are very lucky here in Playa del Carmen, we have more sun than we do rain so another option is to simply take advantage of this weather. Stay home guilt free with your feet up and catch up on your favorite TV show, start or finish that book you’ve been meaning to read and listen to the rain against your window enjoying a hot cup of coffee or bowl of soup.

Enjoy your time off!

And remember, at Top Mexico Real Estate…

we make it happen!
