About 40 km south of Playa del Carmen is the town of Akumal, from the Mayan for ¨Place of Turtles¨. On the west side of  Highway 307 you will find the pueblo where most local people live. On the beach side is where most expats have settled down. Being such a popular expat residential neighborhood Akumal offers mostly single family homes, however small condominiums are also built throughout. These condos are beachfront and are structures that were erected back in the ´80s and ´90s. Most of the single family homes are waterfront but have a rocky terrain with no direct access to the beach. Only Akumal Bay and Half Moon Bay have sandy stretches of beach that neither allows beachfront property to be built. The atmosphere is very tropical and surrounded by jungle.
The family homes are usually large for family getaways or rentals, as Akumal is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. There are hardly any empty lots and new construction is restricted in the area so the safe bet is investing in an already built property. The beaches of Akumal are some of the most popular in the region. The main beach is located within a small bay breaking down the wave action from the ocean. As there is a lot of sea grass this is a popular sea turtle feeding and nesting area. Half Moon bay is a separate cove where you will find another beach. The area is inhibited by many corrals and has become a popular snorkeling spot.
Within Akumal you will find a great variety of restaurants, bars and cafes. On the beach side of Akumal you will find about 3 or 4 restaurants, Half Moon bay has one of the expats favorites ¨La Buena Vida¨ which offers food, drinks and great live music.
Through the main entryway of Akumal you will find several convenience stores. In the Akumal pueblo you can find several grocery stores and fruit and vegetable shops. A food market operates twice a week in the main plaza of Akumal beach. A 10 minutes drive will take you to a big grocery store in Puerto Aventuras to the north and Tulum to the south. Morning breakfast specials are always available in Half Moon bay and there is a restaurant located right on Akumal beach.
Being a beachfront community, the most common activities are water sports. You can rent kayaks or go snorkeling and diving to explore the reef and wildlife. The closest golf is available only a 5 minutes drive from Akumal. For those that enjoy running or jogging the path from Akumal to Yal-koo is a beautiful, safe place to enjoy. The most common hobbies are walks on the beach, reading by the beach and yoga. Boating and fishing are huge hobbies for most of the local residents and renting kayaks or catamarans is easy.Â
