Yucatan real estate is focused around the colonial city of Merida, the largest city and cultural center of this area of Mexico. When people think of Merida and Yucatan, images of colonial architecture and ancient pyramids come to mind; but it is just as important that this city offers modern conveniences, excellent opportunities in cheap Mexico real estate, and even some important celebrations from back home.

If you choose to live in Merida, it offers all of the key attractions of living in Mexico. The city center is a colonial gem, the second largest in the country, providing block after block of romantic narrow streets lined with beautiful buildings dating back hundreds of years and stylish street lamps. Only 30 minutes away is a beachfront area, which stretches out for miles in either direction; residents of the city can easily drive down to enjoy this resort area.

Of course, very close by are the ruins of Chichen Itza, one of the most important cities in the ancient Mayan civilization. While the pyramids of Chichen Itza are definitely awe-inspiring (they were named one of the Wonders of the Ancient World for a good reason) this is only one site of over 80 others available for residents to visit. There are hundreds more which are being discovered, cleaned and prepared for visitors little by little.

But Merida and Yucatan are not just an ancient relic. First of all, Mexican culture is living in this city, and expats can enjoy local food, live Mariachis, orchestra concerts, jazz concerts, and much more. In Merida, a group of expats, joined by a number of Mexicans, even celebrated the 4th of July! So, while you enjoy a city rich in history, culture and art, you can still feel at home with your own important festivities!

Merida is also a metropolitan city; it includes modern services and amenities. There are modern shopping malls, state-of-the-art hospitals, golf courses, international stores (everything from Walmart to high-end clothing boutiques) and many other trappings of modern life.

The best part about this excellent combination; it's very affordable. Real estate is cheap. Whether you are buying a colonial fixer-upper, or a villa out in a gated community, prices will not only be less expensive than back home, but even than many other places in Mexico. Groceries also cost less, bills are lower, tours are more affordable, and services (such as a maid to clean your house and cook) are generally much more accessible in price.

Consider living in Merida, where you can enjoy history and culture, live in comfort, and live affordably.
