While the thought of living in Europe is intriguing, when it comes right down to retirement, something a little closer to home, a little more accessible, and a lot more affordable would be nice. Playa del Carmen retirement offers all of these advantages, plus, as a little bonus, it even offers a little taste of Europe.

If you choose to retire in the north half of Playa del Carmen's downtown, you will not only have close walking access to all the conveniences of downtown - the beach, restaurants, shops, large grocery stores, etc. - but you will also be enjoying an Italian twist to your retirement lifestyle. This part of town has been named "Little Italy" because of the large number to Italians who settled in the area and invested in opening businesses.

The following are a few samples of what you will enjoy:

  • High-quality Italian restaurants - this is the real thing, straight from Italy.

  • Numerous cafes with sidewalk patios, serving any type of coffee that suits your taste, whether it be espresso or just regular American coffee, as well as delicious cookies and pastries.

  • Gelaterias. Italians are famous for their excellent ice cream. These ice-cream shops offer dozens of wonderful flavors and are a visual pleasure as well.

  • An Italian shop with a range of cookies, olive oils, tomato sauces, olives, wines, ground coffee (all from Italy, of course) and those little stove-top coffee makers that Italians love so much - called "moka pots." They also serve delicious baguette sandwiches (and coffee.)

  • Several bakeries. There's nothing like freshly baked bread every morning or a rich chocolate cake! (Yes, it is much better than the one you get in the grocery store!) There's one that specializes in cakes and pastries and another that specializes in bread, and local Mexican-style sweet-bread.

  • A fruit and vegetable market, that also sells imported food. Adjoining is a little restaurant that serves all food make from the high-quality produce of the market.

Also adding to the community's atmosphere is the fact that all buildings are low-rise, and there are small blocks; off the main streets, the roads are fairly quiet, and their are a few private, bilingual schools in the area, making it a quiet, fairly residential pocket within downtown. The area is ideal for a quiet, but active, Playa del Carmen retirement, with a little bit of an Italian twist to it!
