One of the main driving factors in the huge success of tourism in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula has been the excellence of “eco-tourism,” i.e. tourism which makes use of, enjoys and respects the area's natural environment.   The success of this same industry has contributed greatly to the quality of life for those buying Mexico real estate in the area, both in terms of activities and of an environment-friendly lifestyle.

Ecotourism in the Yucatan area has been a prime example of the successful implementation of a well-organized plan.   Under the scheme of Environmental Management Units (AMU in Spanish) has been adopted with great success in the Southeast and in the decade between 2000 and 2010 has grown 25 percent, unifying social, human and economic development with environmental conservation.

In terms of activities, this presents a real benefit.   For example, in the Yucatan real estate area, residents can enjoy swimming in cenotes (fresh, naturally occurring pools), diving in the ocean, fishing, sailing, visiting a wild flamingo habitat, helping recently hatched sea turtles safely return to the sea and much more.   These kinds of activities are very attractive for buyers, especially since they can be enjoyed all year, and the prices are relatively low.   Real estate has also developed around them.     Marina front condos allow boat owners easy access to the sea, and homes for sale next to cenotes or lagoons are attractive for those who love nature.

Another example on the Yucatan Peninsula is Playa del Carmen real estate.   In addition to many similar ecotourism activities to those listed for Yucatan, it is also next to the world's second largest coral reef.   Perhaps just as significantly, in the surrounding area a culture for environment-friendly lifestyle has developed.   Some real estate developments offer eco-friendly, off-the-grid lots, where residents build homes running on solar and wind power.   Other developments are full-scale resorts, which offer highly energy efficient systems, not only protecting natural resources, but also offering energy savings to real estate owners.   In other cases, builders and lot buyers have experimented with eco-friendly designs that design window shape and lay-out to maximize air-flow and minimize heating from the sun.   Sustainability, to a lesser or greater extent, is a concept which is ever more present in top developments of the area.

The success of eco-tourism has made the development of this kind of lifestyle possible in these real estate areas; as ecotourism continues to grow, buyers can expect to see more presence and influence in real estate and lifestyle.
