A number of Mexico real estate locations on the Pacific Coast offer a nice balance of Mexico’s history and modern lifestyle.  Two leading markets that offer this combination, each in their own way, are Puerto Vallarta real estate and Ixtapa real estate.

Puerto Vallarta

History – Traditionally, Puerto Vallarta was a fishing village on the Pacific Ocean sheltered by the large Bay of Banderas.  This village still forms the Old Town of Puerto Vallarta where narrow, cobble-stone streets are lined with quaint, little white homes, centered around a beautiful old church.  Currently the While the Old Town is now home to many shops and restaurants, not to mention the famous “Malecon” – the boardwalk which forms the heart of the city’s tourism, shopping and nightlife, local farmers still show up selling their produce on a cart pulled by a mule.

Another part of Puerto Vallarta’s history is its romance with Hollywood – or, more correctly, Hollywood’s romance in Puerto Vallarta.  During the 60’s, shortly after the town began to draw attention as an expat community, Puerto Vallarta became the location for shooting movies like Cleopatra, and became the first home to the long-lasting romance between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.  While most people prefer to avoid the scandal and publicity of this kind of romance, Puerto Vallarta is still an ideal place to rekindle old romances!

Modern Lifestyle

Around this old village and the original expat communities where these famous actors lived, many new communities with nice condos, shopping centers, an international airport, golf courses, excellent hospitals and much more have appeared.  Residents in Puerto Vallarta can truly enjoy the old and the new hand in hand.

Ixtapa

History

While Ixtapa’s history is directly tied into its modern lifestyle – it was created from scratch during the 70’s, like Cancun – it was built directly next to the older Mexican town of Zihuatanejo. Like the old town of Puerto Vallarta, Zihuatanejo had existed for centuries before as a local community.  The town celebrates its own regional variation of many traditional Mexican festivities.  Residents of Ixtapa can easily make the 10 minute drive to enjoy the traditions of the community next door.  The two communities are expected to grow together in the near future.

Zihuatanejo has was mentioned the movie Shawshank Redemption as the final destination and escape for the two former inmates.

Modern Life

Ixtapa was built to offer modern lifestyle, and it does. With high-rise condos and modern stores, residents can live comfortably in Ixtapa next to some of the Pacific’s most beautiful beaches while being only a short drive away from Zihuatanejo.

If you’re interested in living in modern comfort while having direct access to Mexico’s history, try Mexico’s Pacific Coast.
