Of the beaches in the Riviera Maya (the area centred around Playa del Carmen, running from Cancun in the north to Tulum in the south) Mamitas Beach is most certainly one of the most outstanding. Many people know it because of the annual jazz festival, which is definitely a big part of the reason. Yet, there is more …
The Jazz Festival – The annual Riviera Maya Jazz Festival for three evenings the last weekend of each November. It takes place right on the sand (with a special stage and lighting set up) and is entirely free. The Festival has been around for 7 years now, and attracts famous names from around the world, both from jazz and other styles. There are also summer “previews” during the month of July. Enjoying live jazz under the stars in the late fall nights in Playa del Carmen (which go down as far as about 65 degrees!) is an experience like very few others!
The Beach Club – Also famous on a more regular basis is the beach club, which has recently transformed itself into a hip, trendy and modern place to hang out and enjoy cold drinks. The club includes a bar and restaurant, as well as lounge chairs to enjoy the view of the beach in complete relaxation.
The Beach Itself – One of the lures of the club and the Jazz Festival is that the beach is one of the most splendid; it’s very wide and spacious, and covered with the soft, white sand of the Riviera Maya, which extends far into the turquoise water of the Caribbean. Even if you’re not into jazz, and you’re not a big fan of trendy beach clubs, you’ll have little choice but to agree that Mamitas is one of the most beautiful beach areas!
The Downtown Location – Another very important factor is the downtown location of Mamitas. It is located just at the north end of the new stretch of downtown. It’s close to cafes, restaurants, bars and nice shops on Fifth Avenue, which runs parallel to the beach. Along the road down from Fifth Avenue (which is about a 5 minute walk) there are now more bars and restaurants opening up largely due to the success of Mamitas.
And, we can’t forget, there are beautiful condo developments directly in the area that make this vacation lifestyle everyday life! Consider visiting Mamitas next time you’re in the Riviera Maya.
