For more and more Americans and Canadians, Mexico retirement is becoming one of the most viable options for living well and within a budget.  A number of Mexico real estate options are commonly considered ideal, the top choice usually being condos.  But what about land – is buying Mexico land for sale a good approach to planning for retirement?  If the following points are true for you, investing in land in Mexico may be a real option to consider.

You prefer a home over a condo – While land is the real estate type you’re buying, the final product will be a home.  This comes down to the basic difference between retirement styles and preferences.  Those who like everything to be done for them, hassle-free and maintenance taken care of usually prefer condos.  Those who like to do more themselves, or at least make the arrangements to have it done a certain way usually prefer homes.  Land is even more for the “get it done yourself” sort, but as we’ll see below, it’s can be less involved, if you prefer.

You plan to hire a maid and/or caretaker – While part of the lure of condo is having the common areas taken care of, the beauty of owning a home is that you can choose where you want help (cooking, cleaning, yard maintenance, etc.) , and hire the appropriate help.  Companies can help manage this to make it more “hands-free” if you prefer.  This kind of help is very affordable in Mexico.  A full-time maid, for example, can be hired for around $500 USD a month.

You have a specific idea in mind of what you want your home to be like – Buying land means you choose the design of your house.  Mexico has high-quality builders who offer a variety of designs, sizes and prices (and who speak English!)

You like undertaking projects – Again, you can choose to oversee the whole project, or hire an architect/builder who will take your design and take care of the project for you.

You have some time before you plan to use your property – The usual timeline to have a high-quality home built in Mexico is about one year.  So, the wait’s not long, but it won’t be read for tomorrow …

You want to save money – Buying land and building in Mexico costs less than buying a completed home similar to the final product you will you enjoy.  For most retirees saving money is an important factor!

Land isn’t for all retirees considering moving to Mexico, but it is certainly a real, viable option worth considering.   Speak to an experienced agent to help you explore this option.
