Playa del Carmen retirement is always an attractive option for Americans and Canadians - especially with the low prices of Playa del Carmen real estate and the ever higher costs of retirement back home.   The area includes a number of excellent communities in which to enjoy retirement.   The following are a few of our top suggestions.

El Cielo - This is a beautiful gated community just 10 minutes north of Playa del Carmen; part of the appeal is that it's 10 minutes closer (for a total drive of 35 minutes) to Mexico's second best connected airport - Cancun International.   Manned security booths, bike trails, green areas and walking distance to the beach are some of the community's highlights; prices are also very accessible.

Little Italy - Little Italy is the name given to the north end of downtown Playa del Carmen.   The area was largely created by Italian expats (the second largest expat group in Playa) who brought with them upscale European restaurants, good pizza, gelaterias, trendy cafes and Mediterranean flavor, both visually and in terms of lifestyle.   Retirees in Little Italy enjoy a walk everywhere lifestyle only a block or two away from the beach, and all the conveniences and services of downtown Playa del Carmen.

Playacar - This gated community is the “Beveryly Hills of Playa del Carmen.” It is located just at the south end of downtown - residents can often walk to all the activities and services of downtown - and includes many of the area's most prestigious homes.   It is very green, with trees lining the streets and bike trails running throughout.   It includes both a beachfront section and a golf course section, each offering the best in their category.

The Island of Cozumel - While this not a part of Playa del Carmen, it is only a 45 minute ferry ride away, and the skyline can be seen on the horizon from the beach.   The island combines a quaint town with a very laid-back lifestyle, lots of nature and close contact with the island's Mayan roots.   Cozumel real estate is also well priced and offers a full variety of options, ranging from cozy Mexican style homes in town to resort condos.

Puerto Aventuras - This is a golf and marina community about 20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen that is more like a small town in itself, with shopping, restaurants and even a school.   Like Playacar, it includes upscale homes and condos, and beautiful tree-lined streets.

There are other communities that retirees can consider, but these are some of the more popular choices, offering top quality lifestyles.
