When buyers consider Mexico real estate on the Yucatan Peninsula, there is a variety of excellent options available. Two of the general options are modern beachfront luxury, defined by Cancun real estate, and old colonial charm, defined by Yucatan real estate in Merida. Let’s consider the main attractive features of each.
Cancun – Cancun was created from scratch just over 40 years ago, and is defined by its newness and modern-ness. The city was designed and planned to appeal to tourists from the U.S., Canada and Europe, offering warm-weather luxury and a comfortable lifestyle.
Life in Cancun reflects this history. It is defined by a modern lifestyle and a city that is similar to a nice, upscale American suburb. There are wide access roads, new shopping malls, international restaurants, American chains, stores like Walmart and Home Depot and similar features. Real estate is defined by high-rise condos overlooking the wide beaches and turquoise sea, and luxury villas in nice complexes.
Yucatan – You might say the capital city of Merida is older than the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. When they founded the city of Merida, they built it over the ruins of an ancient Mayan city on the same site. The current city is defined by the colonial architecture and layout which the Spanish colonists gave the city. Narrow roads, small city blocks, lush green city squares with benches, trees and lots of flowers (all year!) all complement the classic architecture and the old beauty which permeates the city.
This atmosphere defines not only the visual atmosphere of the city, but also the lifestyle. It is an ideal place for expats who enjoy walking everywhere, sipping coffee in a sidewalk café, shopping in local fruit markets and simply seeing beautiful things. The culture of the city remains alive and vibrant. Musicians play in the street, in restaurants and in parks. Museums, galleries and live music make culture a part of day to day life. Mayan people remain an important part of the city’s living culture, and residents are likely to hear their ancient language spoken in the streets.
The good news about the two cities is that they are only a three hour drive away from each other. Residents of either city can take a little drive and enjoy the “other side of the coin” easily enough. The difficult part is deciding between the two.
