This weekend the island of Cozumel and Xcaret Park hosted The\u00c2\u00a0Sacred Mayan Journey, a sacred ritual which has been performed since ancient times. The Sacred Maya Journey is a\u00c2\u00a0recreation of a part of Mayan history and culture and it\u00c2\u00a0includes rituals, dances and ceremonies. \u00c2\u00a0This year the canoers departed from X\u00e2\u20ac\u2039caret Park and arrived at Chankanaab in Cozumel Island. The following day they boarded their canoes once again and ended the journey with a return trip to X\u00e2\u20ac\u2039caret.\u00e2\u20ac\u2039<\/p>\n

The Maya used to cross the sea on their canoes to Cozumel Island to\u00c2\u00a0worship the Ixchel goddess. The island goes back a long way and was thought to have been settled by the Mayan civilization, who worshiped it as a place of fertility. It\u00c2\u00b4s just a\u00c2\u00a0short 30\u00c2\u00adminute ferry ride to Playa del Carmen\u00c2\u00a0where local residents enjoy\u00c2\u00a0the resort lifestyle amongst\u00c2\u00a0natural beauty and survives on tourism. The island has\u00c2\u00a0white-sand beaches and crystal clear blue waters, with many\u00c2\u00a0activities to take part in such\u00c2\u00a0snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cozumel has\u00c2\u00a0the second biggest reef barrier in the world called the Mesoamerican Reef<\/a>, which make for an incredible underwater life. There is also an abundance of\u00c2\u00a0shopping available and many places to get a bite to eat among the many restaurants.<\/p>\n

Xcaret has always been a\u00c2\u00a0main shipping port of pilgrimages to Cozumel, so it was appropriate to\u00c2\u00a0begin the 10th Sacred Mayan Journey here. It\u00c2\u00a0was recently recognized as the best international theme park and the best water park<\/a><\/strong>. It\u00c2\u00a0won the 2016 Travvy Award held in New York City<\/strong> and it reached the finals along with Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan for the category of B\u00e2\u20ac\u2039est International Theme Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It\u00c2\u00b4s easy to see why it has received such accoldaes. It\u00c2\u00b4s located\u00c2\u00a0approx 15 minutes by car from t\u00e2\u20ac\u2039he entrance to Playacar Phase II south gated entrance, across from the Centro Maya shopping centre. Residents of Playacar can take a bike path from the gated community \u00cc\u0081s entrance on the highway all the way to the inside of the park. It\u00c2\u00b4s\u00c2\u00a0a convenient way to get there and provides ample opportunity to meet the residents of the area, like the iguanas and birds that can be found along the way. Once there visitors can enjoy the many\u00c2\u00a0activities such as exploring\u00c2\u00a0underground rivers, swimming with turtles or taking an\u00c2\u00a0ATV ride.<\/p>\n
