In Ottawa last Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement alongside Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, and U.S. president Barack Obama. If you have friends in Mexico who have expressed an interest in coming to visit you in your home country, you’ll have likely felt the frustration that has come with the current restrictions.

Trudeau made the following statement: “Lifting the visa requirement will deepen ties between Canada and Mexico and will increase the flow of travelers, ideas and businesses between both countries.” He added that closer collaboration between Canada and Mexico “will also help encourage travel between the two countries.” Removing the visa requirement for visitors from Mexico was one of the mandates for Trudeau, whose campaign made it a priority to rectify a situation which has seen many Mexican unable to travel to the country.

Read: 5 Things You Need to Know Before Traveling to Mexico

It appears he is making good on his promises, and Mexico has responded by agreeing to allow imports of Canadian beef. This is significant because this market has been closed since mad-cow disease first began being reported in Canadian beef over a decade ago. Canadian cattlemen believe that could mean sales of over $250 million every year, all thanks to demand by Mexico.

Read: Canadians Living in Mexico: Snowbird or Permanent Resident?

The other area in where this should prove positive is the tourism industry. According to the CME (Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters) this issue has caused a significant loss of revenue but has also contributed to an inability to invest for many people. The organization feels that the ability for people to travel and do business across borders should be “unencumbered by unnecessary regulatory restrictions”. This increases the competitiveness of both economies, who are close integrated by North America’s manufacturing and service industries.”

With the work of the Prime Minister of Canada, and the commitment of organizations like the CME and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Mexico, there is finally a positive move forward in Canadian-Mexican relations that is sure to be beneficial for all who choose to invest in either nation. As potential investors of real estate in Mexico, it’s vital that you as a customer be able to count on having full access to anyone you might wish to buy from, and their ability to travel unrestricted helps you tremendously in the long run.

If you’d like more information about living in Mexico or are interested in purchasing property here, we invite you to visit our main website where you can search further.
