Now that you live in Mexico<\/a> or you are planning to retire in Mexico, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s necessary for you to know you can obtain a CURP even if you are not a Mexican citizen.<\/p>\n

What is a CURP?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A CURP is an identification number assigned to every Mexican citizen or Mexican resident. It stands for \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Clave \u00c3\u0161nica de Registro de Poblaci\u00c3\u00b3n<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (Unique Population Registry Code) and it is similar to what people in the U.S. know as their Social Security number. Every CURP is a unique identification number with an 18-character string, and has no duplicate entries.<\/p>\n

It is very important to own a CURP. Most government services will require it since it works as a national identifier. A few examples of why you might need it are: to get a Mexican driver\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s license, file Mexican taxes, get free healthcare, job applications and Civil Registry records.<\/p>\n

Also, if you’re thinking to retire in Mexico, people from 60 years old can acquire an INAPAM card and enjoy the amazing benefits of it, as discounts in: drugstores, airlines, restaurants, optical shops, hotels and medical laboratories.<\/p>\n

How do I get it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The process to get a CURP is easy, free and it will not take too much time. As a foreigner, the schedule is Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.<\/p>\n

You must bring these documents to the Instituto Nacional de Migraciones <\/em>(immigration):<\/p>\n

-Passport (original and a copy)<\/p>\n

-Residence card (original and a copy)<\/p>\n

-A letter of intent (CURP request letter)<\/p>\n
