It is a historical journey back to 500 BC, and is a re-enactment of the sacred\u00c2\u00a0pilgrimage of the Mayan\u00c2\u00a0culture\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0to the island of Cuzamil (now known as Cozumel). Today in Playa del Carmen, the journey is accomplished as it was back in the day by handcrafted canoes and the oarsmen, many are brave volunteers, wear similar attire from that time as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i22.photobucket.com\/albums\/b312\/slither76\/sacred%20journey%202010\/TSM2010-60.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"177\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The festivities are sponsored by Solidaridad, Cozumel and Excaret, the nature park where the group begins their quest. There is a detailed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travesiasagradamaya.com.mx\/TSM-2010-ENG\/pdf\/PROGRAM-TSM-2010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">program<\/a> for the re-enactment\u00c2\u00a0including a market\u00c2\u00a0trade and preparation for departure of the oarsmen,\u00c2\u00a0all centering around\u00c2\u00a0a goddess named Ixchel.\u00c2\u00a0This is a very important goddess as she is goddess of the moon, the tides and fertility. The ceremonies objective was to honor her and ask for her blessings.<\/p>\n<p>Early in the am\u00c2\u00a0of the 21st,\u00c2\u00a0groups leave both (Dos Playas)\u00c2\u00a0Xcaret and Xaman-Ha, (now known as Playa del Carmen) and head towards Cozumel. Once they arrive, the exhausted oarsmen are greeted with food and drink.
