How Mexico calculates the electric bills?<\/h3>\n

Unlike in the US or Canada, where electricity is charged on a per-unit basis, the price per unit of electricity goes up as your usage goes up. The more you consume, the higher the per-unit price you will pay. As long as you stay below a level deemed as a limit of use, electricity in Mexico is very reasonable. However, that cost goes up dramatically as you pass those limits.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are a few tips to help you lower your electric costs:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Tip 1: Upgrade your electricity draining items.<\/h4>\n

Many older homes do not have efficient appliances or up to date electrical systems. Inverter systems are available on most appliances, including ACs, washing machines, and refrigerators. Replacing old wiring may also be necessary for older homes. Instant water heaters are now available so that hot water is on tap when you need it without requiring a source to maintain its temperature.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tip 2: Check for leaks!<\/h4>\n

Many older homes have windows and doors that don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t seal properly. Check to see if caulking needs replacing or if you can add weather stripping to ensure that the air you are cooling is not escaping to the outside.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tip 3: Turn it off when not in use!<\/h4>\n

Most homes have mini-splits that are specific to a room or area of your home. Turn units on and off based on the room you are occupying. Mini-splits cool rooms quickly and eliminate the need to remain on when the room is not in use. If you’re renting your unit, make clear notification of the limits of electrical use. Many rental companies charge for electricity used outside of the average consumption. Clearly remind tenants to turn off lights and air conditioning when not in use.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tip 4: Use fans.<\/h4>\n

Moving air feels cooler than static air and will allow you to set your AC unit at a higher temperature.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tip 5: Solar Power<\/h4>\n

Solar Power has become an affordable option that pays for itself in a short time. In the past, the only option was to have large batteries that stored electricity for future use. The batteries require maintenance and can be more labor-intensive than many people would like. If you want to live off the grid, this is a great option.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Systems are now available that allow you to collect energy, and what is not used directly is returned to CFE (the local electric company) for a credit against your future use. When you are not generating electricity, you can use the electricity credited to your account and draw the same as any other client. Of course, this requires the installation of the solar panels and a special meter from the electric company to allow you to return unused electricity to them for credit.<\/span><\/p>\n

A little saved now can be used for other things in the future, and we all help the environment just a little!<\/span><\/p>\n
