{"id":4556,"date":"2012-05-09T09:32:07","date_gmt":"2012-05-09T14:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/temp-blog\/?p=4556"},"modified":"2017-08-30T11:44:59","modified_gmt":"2017-08-30T16:44:59","slug":"mexico-real-estate-%e2%80%93-polls-show-varied-results-with-mexican-elections-only-8-weeks-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/mexico-real-estate-%e2%80%93-polls-show-varied-results-with-mexican-elections-only-8-weeks-away\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexico Real Estate \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Polls Show Varied Results with Mexican Elections only 8 Weeks Away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/\">Mexico real estate<\/a> buyers and even many expats already living in Mexico don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t pay much attention to Mexico\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s elections, federal policies can have an important role in shaping various aspects of lifestyle for Americans and Canadians living here.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the policies of the PAN (National Action Party) \u00e2\u20ac\u201c have been largely credited with Mexico\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s economic growth over the past decade during the presidency\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s of Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderon.\u00c2\u00a0 During this time, Mexico has become the world leader in new highway infrastructure, opening access to many new areas for expats to travel to and even live in on a very low budget, and telecommunications such as excellent cellphone coverage, high-speed internet and wireless networks have become commonplace.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the drug related conflicts that harmed various pockets in the north of the country have been a central issue in this year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s presidential debates.\u00c2\u00a0 President Calderon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s (PAN) policy of war on drugs has led to escalated conflicts; some criticize his policy as creating unnecessary violence, others hail it as a decisive and firm stand that will end the power of drug lords bringing better long-term results in the future.<\/p>\n<p>While favorite expat areas, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmexicorealestate.com\/playadelcarmen-real-estate\/\">Playa del Carmen real estate<\/a> and the entire Yucatan Peninsula, are largely free of this kind of violence, these conflicts remain one of the first questions that soon-to-be expats will (justifiably) ask.\u00c2\u00a0 The policy of Mexico\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s next president \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to be elected in July \u00e2\u20ac\u201c on this and economic policies will be important for how Americans and Canadians feel about making this country their new home, and for those interested mostly in investment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results Mixed After Big Debate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the election date of July 1 draws near, however, Mexican polls show mixed results of who is currently the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s favorite candidate.\u00c2\u00a0 This week brought an important landmark with a televised debate from the 4 presidential candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters, among other sources, has cited poll results giving a clear lead to one candidate, with a breakdown as follows:<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Enrique Pena Nieto\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/5\/5d\/Pe%C3%B1a_Nieto.jpg\" alt=\"Enrique Pena Nieto\" width=\"460\" height=\"591\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Enrique Pena Nieto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/5\/5d\/Pe%C3%B1a_Nieto.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Enrique Pena Nieto<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c According the poll cited by Reuters, Pena Nieto \u00e2\u20ac\u0153retains a clear lead\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with <strong>36.3 percent<\/strong> favoring him as the next president, nearly 13 percent above his nearest rival. Pena Nieto is the candidate of the Institutional Revolution Party (PRI), which held the presidency from the end of the Mexican Revolution a bit less than a century ago until Vicente Fox (PAN) was elected president in 2000.\u00c2\u00a0 The party still holds largely unrivaled support in the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rural areas.\u00c2\u00a0 Pena Nieto was the most recent governor of the state of Mexico, which is surrounds the capital district of Mexico City and is largely covered by its suburbs.\u00c2\u00a0 During his time as governor, he had a large number of modern new highways built in the state.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/3e\/Andres_manuel_lopez_obrador_oct05.jpg\" alt=\"Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador\" width=\"270\" height=\"343\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Lopez Obrador is the candidate for the leftist PRD (Democratic Revolution Party); he came in a very close second place in the 2006 election \u00e2\u20ac\u201c so close, that he and his supporters spent several months claiming he was the real winner of the election, shutting down an important street in Mexico City with a camp-out protest.\u00c2\u00a0 Investors generally feel that his hard-left policies would hurt the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s economy and possibly slow down Mexico\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rapid modernization, yet he has fairly strong support especially in the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s very large low-income urban population.\u00c2\u00a0 The same poll from Reuters put him at second place with <strong>23.4 percent<\/strong>, well behind Pena Nieto.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 413px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Josefina Vazquez Mota\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/0\/02\/JVM.jpg\/413px-JVM.jpg\" alt=\"Josefina Vazquez Mota\" width=\"413\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Josefina Vazquez Mota<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Josefina Vazquez Mota<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Almost neck-in-neck with Lopez Obrador is Vazquez Mota, the candidate for the conservative National Action Party (PAN) \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the same party as Mexico\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s current President Felipe Calderon.
